Charity / Fundraising

All,

I am in the process of trying to arrange some fundraising for a Cancer Research charity event in the Lake District in June.

One of the ideas that has been suggested is whether I could auction or raffle a day out on the boat to staff at work.

Anyone know how this fits with the requirements of coding and insurance ?

I'm guessing as it is not for hire or reward it should be ok. Will check with the insurance company but thought I'd get your views too. Has anyone done anything like this previously ?

Cheers

Mike

Hmm not sure if it would be ok, best to check out with your insurance company, re raising funds great cause, have you thought about approaching any powerboat schools in that area to see if they would donate a pb2 course as a prize . you can offer them the advertising and get the local papers involved to sing their praises good luck with it

Tim

Great thinking - as the primary target will be none boaters there are a couple of companies that offer RIB rides running from Cardiff Bay - I'll drop them a note and see if there willing to throw a couple of tickets our way.

Cheers

how about rib net getting involved in a bit of charity work, once a year we could have an auction on the net, the training schools could offer courses
engineers a service and so on the charity would be chosen by JK
what do you guy's think i will start the ball rolling with a RYA INTERMEDIATE
course for one, any one else want to offer something

We have done similar things a few times, and have usually come away from it just wishing we had
donated the fee for the day as opposed to providing the service. This doesn't mean I've soured to the idea but I am only really interested in donating a service worth £250 as a prize providing it makes at least £250 for the charity.

So Mike B how much is your target figure from the Raffle! On the basis of the above put me down for a PB2 course or a trip for 5 around the Solent.

Tim I don't think your idea is a bad one but It's gotta pull in some money for the charity, we have a reasonable charter operation at Saxon Wharf and are an RYA accredited training centre so we (First Wave Ribs) have a few things to offer

Great to see some feed back , i still like the idea of a charity auction i am willing to donate a course for one free the value is £185 i hope that someone would bid that amount or more or if you like raffle tickets, the more people that come on board donating a service or item the better hopefully other schools in other areas will also offer courses/services its an idea thats all and could be done once a year eg Christmas time on the net, the charity is chosen by rib net and once the money is in the charity account a (in my case ) voucher would be sent to the bidder or the item it needs to be kicked around a bit more but its open to everyones ideas you never know if it works
it could be a regular thing

Wow the generosity of this group staggers me every time I see it.

Ok - some background.

The fundraising we are carrying out is part of the Centrica Lakes Challenge.

The Centrica Lakes Challenge is a unique fundraising event
organised exclusively for Centrica employees taking place from Friday 18 June
to Monday 21 June in the heart of the English Lake District. Up to 39 teams of seven will take part in a variety of mental and physical challenges across the weekend . The aim of the event is not only to bring teams together
from across the Centrica network but also to raise almost £200,000 for Cancer Research UK. Whilst the focus of the event is fundraising, teams are able to score points by completing specific parts of the challenge, with the winners being awarded the Centrica Lakes Challenge trophy at the awards ceremony on the final evening.

In order for the team to enter we need to raise £5000.

I agree with Stuart that if people are generous enough to offer services we need to ensure that at least close to the cost of the normal service is achieved. As the raffle we were originally planning would involve Centrica staff at our Cardiff Offices the services currently offered would not suit and would probably not raise enough money to justify the donation of the service.

However if JK was in agreement and happy to allow RIBnet to "host" an auction of services and people are generous enough to offer services there is a higher potential to raise money.

Alternatively if any businesses are happy to purely sponser the team I will do whatever possible to get some appropriate publicity - eg local papers to the business - PBO, RIB international, sports boat and Rib. I'm not sure of how easy this will be but I will try my best.

Obviously we will also be happy to accept any private sponsers.

If anyone wants any more info on the event let me know as I have a PDF I can E-mail out to you. If anyone wants to make any offers - you can email me at mike.burns@centrica.co.uk.

Cheers

Mike

I am very happy to do this in principle, but we'll need to put some thought into the best way of doing it.

I would think that we'll need to publicise it to a much larger audience somehow, and I don't know whether an auction or raffle would be better . . .

Sounds like a great idea though

John

John,

Thanks for your support I will sit down tomorrow and think this through, then drop you and E mail / PM.

If any one has any ideas how we could publise an auction quickly let me know. The main concern for me would be getting things moving and publicised before the event 18th - 21st June.

David - thanks for your generosity. NB Can I include an "As seen on TV" from Danger on the Beach !

John,

how about creating a fund raising thread which would contain the sub threads of the generous prizes people are offering. Members then bid on the thread for their chosen prize the winner being anounced after an elapsed date.

Could this work?

I think this is a great fund raising idea, bring it on!

may be if someone approached the magazines for advertising this would
have to be free advertising, and would be their way of giving something
i'm am amazed at how this is developing, but we know there are lots more people out there who use rib net who could come up with a donation of a service/ goods or course
nice one Dave Hickman any other schools out there going to give

Tim,

I'm planning to try and make contact with MBY, RIB Int, SB and R etc today to see if they could get involved. Other option which I had thought of and may be easier is some sort of "advert" in Boat Mart or something similar in order to spread the word.

Cheers

Mike

Given the enthusiastic response so far, perhaps it might be worth considering making this into a series of auctions over a longer period -- that way the publicity would accumulate and we could potentially have different charities for different items.

If we put everything up in one go it might dilute the available buying power and get a wide spread of lower bids, rather than higher bids on fewer items.

Just food for thought . . .

If we do make it an auction then what reserve price would donors accept as reasonable? I don't want anyone to end up giving up a day of their time or a bit of expensive kit and only raising a token amount!

Another option would be a raffle, and not close it until sufficient tickets have been bought. I think this would mean a lot more effort and admin hassle though.

John

Have now heard back from Sports Boat and Rib Magazine.

They have offered 12 month subscriptions to the following for auction.

Jet Skier and Personal Watercraft
Sports Boat and RIB
All at Sea Newspaper

Plus I'm hoping they can give us some editorial space.

good point i am happy to see the voucher given to the highest bidder hopefully they will offer that amount(£185) or higher as the whole spirit of a charity auction is to pay over the top for goods/service but if it raises less so
be it any more out there going to put up some stuff come on dig deep
it is for charity(now wheres my tin)
