Cheap as chips or dodgy deal?

This looks like a bargain at only a grand http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/F137062/. Might be an ideal project for someone if its genuine.

RIBase
I think it's genuine. The motor's pretty much worthless, the trailer's crap and it sounds like it needs a retube-but it's usable and he wants it gone.

Ribtec, either a 5.35 or a 5.85 I'd guess.

The boat is now on ebay, it does look in a very tired state. Check out the a frame looks like lightweight alloy scaffold poles also it was once an inboard and is now fitted with an outboard, so it might well be a money pit http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ribtec-585-RIB...QQcmdZViewItem

Cheap as Chips - Anyone who's ever attempted to restore a boat of any kind will tell you that its not as cheap to do as people think, start with the transom, looks like its shagged, far to many holes and whats that checker plate hiding ? then the tubes may clean up ok but i'd suggest a re tube, which your looking at 2k ish give or take, then that engine, he's stated it turns over, if it needs a new motor your looking at 7-8k for a proporsional lump, add electrics seating re wire and a trailer that works for the size of boat and your looking at a considerable sum of money to go boating, trust me i wanted to go boating once and thought i'd just go out and buy a cheap boat, but they dont exist........If you want to do anything more that floating around a lake its gona cost money.

Only good thing is he seem to have been fairly honest about the condition.

The seller does know his boats

He's also refurbed a fair few ribs now, all of which are in active service in a far better condition than when he took them on. Perhaps best not to pass judgement without actually seeing the boat.

If the seller is not refurbing this one - does it need too much work ?

It may be an honest description but that seems to say the only good thing is the outer hull (not including transom ).

I'm not sure I can fully speak for him on this particular question - but I believe the issue is neither time, resources or ability for restoration, simply storage.

I love the way people on RIBnet love to comment on things they havn't actually seen

I shall set the record straight. I am selling the boat as many of you will know from the ebay id. It is a very good project. As far as I am concerned the hull (and the transom) are perfectly useable with a bit of tidying. The transom does have several holes where the outdrive once was, and as the ebay as says I would fix this by resealing them as a precaution and then replacing the tatty plate to something more tidy, and to reinforce the transom. The tubes (again as the ebay ad says) are usable but tatty. I intend to clean them over the weekend with some boatcare uk majic ribcleaner which should bring them up a lot better. I shall update the ebay ad with pics when I have done this.

The trailer included in the ad again is perfectly sound and useable. I have not posted photos of it as it is currently not in Porstmouth. I will be taking photos of it on Sunday morning and again will update when I have these.

The a-aframe is made of stainless tubing. It is very strong and I can confirm is not made of scaffold poles.

As the ad says anyone is welcome to view it. Just email/pm me and we can arrange a time for a viewing.

Yes the boat will require money and time spent on it to get it looking nice again. However I think this will be more than worth it. When you consider the price tidy examples of this model of a similar age go for I think you will agree.

Tim

Correct. I've got massive storage issues at the moment. I currently have 7 boats in Portsmouth, 5 of which are in my garden. Trying to find extra space to store stuff like boats and trailers is a massive headache, both practically and financially. I had the joy of receiving an angry letter from several of my neighbors two days ago due to the 25ft boat trailer I had parked on the street outside.

Jimbo - Re read my post as its more about my experiences than this issue, having sat and worked out what i spent on my boat over the years (and that includes a new engine) i recon i would have been somewhere close to the cost of a new rib of the same size, granted some of the issues were down to my own incompitence or lack of knowledge, and would i do it all again.....certainly not, the blown out boating days, heartache when the engine lets you down, the failure of electronics, or watching your transom crack open due to water ingress i can well do without these days, add to this the massive amounts of grief from the wife every time i wanted to spend hundreds on the next failed component

There really is no such thing as a cheap boat !
