Coll & Tiree
Hi Folks.
We're heading up to Oban again for a couple of weeks on Saturday and thinking a trip to Coll or/and Tiree might make a good day out.
Any local knowlegdge of the facilities and highlights of either island would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I was on Coll for a night in 2016 - nice spot. I'll dig the link up.
Tiree is fairly tricky to overnight a boat on- no moorings or decent quay wall. Coll has visitor moorings and a quay that almost dries out. Decent hotel, no formal campsite, some B&Bs. There was petrol a short walk from the quay. The Coll Hotel seems to be the go-to for everything. There is a "field" behind the hotel you can camp on and the hotel does showers and brekkie for WAFIs. They charge for the moorings too.
I might be starting Sunday in Tobermory, heading home then. I'll keep a beady eye out for you...

Think Tiree now has visitor moorings:

Tiree is fine if you don't mind the boat drying out in the Harbour at Scarnish (its a sandy bottom - but I seem to remember some stuff you might not want to rest on close to the bottom of the wall on the NE). Not sure if Frazertiree still checks his PM's on here - but he now runs a RIB trip boat from there. You can get fuel (in cans) from the garage next to the Calmac slipway - and in calm conditions should be able to get your boat alongside to lower them down.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Polly.
"Both in a day"? OK miles wise but maybe pushing it in terms of time for having a decent visit.
We're fine for fuel and don't intend to stay overnight so given we only do one or the other.....I'm getting the impression maybe Coll is the better bet ?

Coll is slightly closer, but once you are there Tiree is on the doorstep. Even if the weather is good though a round trip must be something like 6-7hrs at sea (I haven’t looked at a chart). lunch on Coll, lap of both islands and then back for a late chippy in Oban?
When you planning to go?

Quick check on Google maps "measure" looks around 110mn if we just hit the east coast of both islands maybe 5hrs. The circumnavigation would push it well over that and probably involve a re-fuel.
If wx is ok I'm thinking maybe Scarinish, Arinagour and then back to Oban. (Dinner in Tobermory even and a late night run down the sound.).
Toughest part will be dragging Breezblock's teenagers oot "O" bed before lunch time.
We'll just keep an eye out for a decent weather window next week.

I have family on Coll. Any time I travel out in my RIB, I stop off in Tobermory for a break and to refuel. The petrol pump on Coll has limited opening times, and the latest price I heard was around £1.55 a litre.
The moorings are owned by CMAL, but the hotel collect the fees.

Great video Last Tango and lovely to see dolphins again. I have not seen a single one this year despite doing hundreds of miles at sea.
Also very interesting to see your fuel usage for that trip. 81 litres.
I took 95 litres and used 75 on my Jura trip on a far lighter boat and only myself in it. I did about 190 land miles. My OB is 25HP Mariner two stroke .
Why I keep it when some SIB folk seem to pay funny money for these old two strokes ..is beyond me ?

The fuel burn of my previous boat gave me "range" issues.
Today's trip was just an wee run out from Largs to Otter Ferry then Tarbert and back to Largs. That was 73nm (84 mls) done on 55 ltrs.
My previous Seapro 520 with it's 75 Merc ELPTO was half the weight with half the power and it couldn't do that trip on it's 60 ltr built in tank. I am a fan of two strokes but the economy of the modern 4 stroke and the extended range that gives is what sells it for me.
