I find a "note pad" (actually a dive slate) and a pencil or two are handy to have for jotting down notes (often for USCG anouncements of vessels in trouble, but could just as well be used for dive start times, reminders about small problems needing fixing, etc.)

Mine is taped on using gaffers tape (or Gorilla tape; don't remember now) with the pencil attached using velcro. One of these days I'll get around to permanently attaching it (it's held for something like 4 years so far.)
