Cowes Inshore Lifeboat

Hi all

I posted a thread a little while ago about Cowes Inshore Lifeboats operation integrating with the RNLI. After a long meeting held with the Stakeholders of the Medina and an EGM held it was decided that the operation is to be handed over to the RNLI.

We are therefore now in a transitional stage of integration with the RNLI, and will be operating under our original banner until such time until the end of this period.

Hi Simon,

I hope this is the direction you want to go in. You and your team seem to be a major part of the life on the Medina and great a reasurance to all.

Will you be keeping your monster boat or will you be getting an Atlantic?

Chris

Assuming that Cowes gets an Atlantic, will the existing boat (and I guess there's a truck load of other non-RNLI kit too) be donated to another Independent Station?

Failing that The BDMLR (British Divers Marine Life Rescue) are always on the look out for new kit.

Am sure this could be put to good use with them.

I have contact details if needed.

Cheers

Be nice to think the assests would benifit another Island Independent Service
Sandown and Shanklin need a new ILB ,Freshwater are looking to raise funds for a new ILB, Ryde have just purchased a new one but still need help with runing costs .

If the kind people of Cowes donnated to Cowes Inshore Rescue perphaps they they should decide what happens to it.

I think it should be donnated to the RNLI so the funds raised could go to Cowes very own Atlantic named after the people who rasied the money.

Thankyou all for your comments. This is subject to discussion in future meetings.

With regards to the boat we will be getting, it will be an Atlantic 85.

Just a question what makes you so sure you are getting an 85 and not a 75 or D class.

Nice thought; but feel it would be better donated to a IOW Unit
such as Shanklin who seem very busy , Freshwater , or Ryde.

The cash rich RNLI do not need it , and as it was orginally donated
to a Independent unit , the Charity Commission might agree if it went
to a independent unit on the IOW.

The problem with donating it to another team is it will not meet the rescue boat code of practice when that is introduced, so would have to go into someone's training fleet. And the problem with training boats is they rapidly become just another "mouth to feed".

There are quite strict rules about what charities can do with their assets, I'm sure CIL will follow these.

Personally, I think the decision is a great shame. Yes, Cowes will get a shiny new boat and all the backup it could need, but it will lose the ability to patrol its area or dictate its own operational processes.

The interesting situation this creates though is RNLI cover in the Solent - once Selsey gets its Tamar, the future of either Bembridge or Calshot must begin to look a bit iffy...

Best of luck to all the Cowes guys anyway.

I did hear rumours of an indie unit being set up by those that did not like the idea of going RNLI - anyone else heard anything?
