Cowes Monte Carlo - safety boats
As anticipated, because we ARE going to start this race from Cowes (on the Yacht Squadron line) we have been advised by the RYA that we are going to have to "sanitize" the area down the 10 mile stretch from Cowes to Hurst with 50 safety boats, We already have some 20 boats so we are a few short. We can't promise money for fuel etc but we will give any boat helping us for that 1/2 hr of the start Cowes/Monte-Carlo momentoes for helping and invitations to our (invitation only) parties in Cowes!!
You will be watching a unique spectacle unfold in front of you as the fleet start their 2,400 mile journey to Monte-Carlo.

Sad news
Mike Lloyd 6:29pm Dec 10
10th December 2012
It’s with deep regret and extreme disappointment that, after two years of intense work, several thousand hours and thousands of miles travelled, my colleagues and I have to inform the Venture Cup Fleet and my own race team that we only have 13 boats that have paid their next tranche of entry fee as per the Venture Cup rules.
Every team – some 42 in total – has known for some considerable time that the 30th November was the last day for this first payment. These payments were vitally important to the running of the race.
Therefore, because of the lack of entries, we have to postpone The Venture Cup - Cowes to Monte-Carlo Race. We cannot ethically continue to use money provided by just a few teams to continue the development of this race with the probability that no more teams would come on board and then these teams’ monies would be seriously depleted. That’s not fair or correct. Fees paid by those 13 teams will be refunded as soon as possible to the best of our ability.
I am personally deeply embarrassed by having to do this and wish to convey my sincere apologies to those who bothered to commit and who sent us their monies and in several cases asked whether they could send ALL of their entry fees. These are the true adventurers, the true offshore racers, who are obviously a rare breed and who want to take part in this type of long distance, multi leg, multi nation offshore racing. But we can’t run a race of this complexity on 13 teams unfortunately.
Dean Gibbs & RB11, Neil McGrigor & RB12 and now The Venture Cup. All of us have suffered serious financial loss, aggravation and considerable amounts of personal time in our determination to bring these famous old races back to life and eventually failing because of the lack of serious competitors. I want to thank all those fantastic volunteers of the Venture Cup team for all their hard work over the last year in trying to bring this race to fruition.
To ensure that this and other great races like it take place in the future, they will have to be run under an alternative organisation/federation so as to attract less bureaucracy and interference. However, it is our understanding that the race WILL in all probability take place on the 8th June 2013 in one form or another but certainly not under MPA Powerboat Events Limited – unfortunately.
Mike Lloyd.

Some very interesting column about this race in paper today about the problems caused by the RYA. Lord Beaverbrook the vice president of British Powerboat Racing Club is looking for a new governing body for the sport, similar to the FIA on FI racing.
He describes the system of RYA being the governing body similar to the FIA also being responsible for the Ramblers Association.
He suggests that Powerboating should not be under the same umbrella as sailing. It also states Mike (above post) suffered when attending RYA at Hamble over three years and at one stage sent others in his place due to RYA resolve and attitudes.
Clearly Mike has not spoken openly about this due to his professionalism but others have written about it. At the time the papers wrote this article NO RYA representative was prepared to be interviewed or make a comment. Very Interesting and such a shame

The powerboat side of the RYA in my opinion is run by health and safety and insurance agents, what they don't seem to have grasp in that it is a sport, hobby, pastime followed by passionate people, for the RYA it is a business

This the word that is being put around by several people. I could be wrong only time will tell. I can say 100% is that we will be setting off from Europa Point Gibraltar for around the world on the 2nd November at 1500 GMT no matter what others are saying

Hi Alan, it seems it will be a bit longer than that - here what one of the organisers put on YBW:
Quote:
Very quick update to above.
Very well attended meeting last Saturday with over 30 teams represented (both in the room and online). Full warts 'n all open debate which ultimately led to the sensible decision that the timeframe to this June was just too tight to run the type of race everyone deserves. London to Monte-Carlo will 100% go ahead in June of 2014. Nothing gets moth-balled and we don't start at some point in the future ...the work of the new team began a few weeks ago and continues every day. We've now got a broad and experienced team so we've every confidence that the full race next year will be amazing.
There is, however, an additional silver lining. It was clear, at the meeting, that there's still an enormous appetite for 'something' this year, so we're going to run a Venture Cup 'Prologue' race this June - to test boats, crews, officials, systems, etc. The first leg will be from London to Guernsey and we're currently investigating a number of add-on legs (decision to be made in the coming days). With a central London start, we've had a lot of enquiries about non-racing boats being part of the spectacle, so we're looking at adding a cruise-in-company to run alongside the main racing fleet. This is one of the few opportunities we all get to put our sport/hobby in front of the BIG media, so it'd be great to see as many boats in convoy as possible. It could/should be an awesome sight.
|
The London start is definitely still on which will be spectacular, I think they will be able to drop the stupid 25 knot wind limit and there will be more legs possibly including a round the islands race and a last leg back to the mainland - that's the minimum and there maybe more.
I think this is sensible as there will be more chance of getting it together in the time frame and build up some credibility for the full race in the future.

Yes indeed. i saw what Aiden put on YBW this morning and other information. Seems like 2013 is planning for a "venture cup" London to Guernsey with possible add on legs and then 2014 for the big one.
Be interesting to see what the next few months bring but clearly there are underlying issues with the organisation, not to mention the RYA's involvement.
Good luck to the new organisers. hope they can pull something off...
