Mike Lloyd and the team behind Round Britain 2008 have come up with a plan for something even more ambitious. Probably the toughest powerboat race in the world (unless anyone else can think of another one that does more than 2400 miles over 11 days!).

Just popped in to fill everyone in on progress. Emails have been going crazy and so have the phone calls. It's pretty obvious that this race is developing a lot of exitement out there which is a good thing of course but very exhausting for us three old geezers.

We have an enormous amount of work to do but most of all we will need the support of as many "intend to race" as possible to offset the huge cost this race is going to involve.

So far we have 28 "count us in's" all within seven days which is not bad in todays world but we will need to have double that to make this race "interesting". We really want to beat our RB08 target of 47 boats crossing the line, a tall order I know but judging by the emails we are getting i think we will make it AND THAT'S A QUOTE!

I will come back in a month or two to bring you up to date on current developments. Back to my unpaid job now!

One last thing, we have been asked by the powers that be to consider raising the mininum length of all boats to 26ft, just for safety sake. This may therefore have to be.

Hopefully we will be able to officially launch at the London Boat Show in January if we can get free use of a stand, coffers are almost empty right now!

A 26ft minimum length is likely to come out at around an 8.5 or 9m RIB, depending on the manufacturer.

This would certainly count out some perfectly capable boats. Alan Priddy did London to Monaco in a 7.4m RIB, which probably had a UIM measured length of around 22ft.

Should be a great event though either way.

There was a good turnout for the official launch at the London Boat Show today.

Mike Bellamy, winner of the 1972 London to Montecarlo was there along with the organising team and some serious silverware from the Sussex Motor Yacht Club.
