Crossing to the Isle of Wight

Hi All,

I have only ever taken my boat out in north wales but am thinking of taking it down to the south coast and looking into potentially crossing the solent to the isle of wight but have heard there is fees attached with this and am unsure on the potential cost of this and where to find out this information any help would be greatly appreciated

cheers in advance

Do you mean taking the boat on a trailer across to the island, staying on the island and launching on the island. Or launching from the mainland and taking the boat over? I’m assuming the former. If so the crossing is quite expensive and yes you will pay for the boat and trailer. Go to their website and check. If you launching from the mainland I can give you advice as I live in Chichester.

The only fees that you'll have to pay are for launching on the mainland side, wherever that may be, & maybe for mooring/berthing on the IOW. What you pay will entirely depend on where you launch/berth. If you're just nipping across for a quick lunch, you may well be able to tie up somewhere for free if you flutter your eyelashes at the relevant person. There aren't any specific fees to pay to cross the Solent.

Assuming you only want to go over for the day you can launch where we launch from Itchenor in Chichester harbour. About £8 harbour fees and £7 launch plus £5.80 car parking but on a nice day a lovely crossing. Or maybe better Warsash £5 launch fee payable in the harbour masters tower, no harbour fees, free trailer parking and I think £5 car park. Quick easy crossing. If you want advice on where to go on the island please ask. Bear in mind the entrances into and out of the Solent can get difficult with wind tide etc. choose a nice day.

Or launch from The Camber slipway in Old Portsmouth. £2.50 launch fee, free trailer parking and pay & display car parking. The slipway is concrete and regularly cleaned. Also only 200m of harbour before you hit the open waters of The Solent

Hi Dry Run, I’ve often looked at Camber slipway but I’m not sure of the procedure. On Portsmouth International Port website there is a form to fill out and send in by post but the form is dated 2014. As I recall there is a bar which comes down to stop unauthorised use. How do you pay your £2.50, do you need to fill in the form and how do you open the gate please?

No form required unless you are a jet-skier. Just put £2.50 in the coin box attached to the barrier and lift it up (it doesn't lift by itself). Once you are in the water and ready to go, you will need to call up KHM on ch11 to ask for permission to cross to the small boat channel on the opposite side of the harbour. Just say "KHM, this is rib ######. Permission to cross from Camber to Ballast"

Regards

- Please

I find QHM Portsmouth to be quite rude at times, especially with non-commercial skippers, so go out of my way to be polite to them.

We do this often. We launch at Mercury marina in Hamble, tidel. We go to the public dock in Cowies by the cat ferry. We then leave the boat in the marina at the end of the day and go and play again the next day.
When in north wales we launch on Abersoch beach

I was talking to one of our clients (ex QHM) and he says that because Portsmouth can be a very busy Naval and commercial port, they prefer communications to be short and precise rather than technically correct. But you're right they can come across as rude sometimes

PS - Have you met Becky?

We called our 18 foot Rinker "Yeah Baby" in 2010. Had to go across Portsmouth Harbour so correctly called what was then QHM on Ch 11. The comedy pause when the reply came back was excellent................................"Yeah Baby this is QHM...over."

You've said that before I think - because I remember thinking about funny names to give and concluded that "I Love You" was a suitable, but inoffensive name.
