That's because, in mass production, it's the cheapest way to do it. Reliability isn't so important with a car, it's in a controlled environment and in ten years time they expect it to be lying shiny-side down in a scrap yard anyway.

I suppose it's not sensible to put a 400hp jet engine in a 5mtr boat (what's happened to him, almost frightened to ask?), and it's not practical to put an electric motor and a ton of lithium batteries in a rib to drive it, so if this is how you want to do it, you go for it.
