Day Skipper Theory Course.

Guys,

I'm thinking of doing this course & have been quoted £245 for the 4 days.

Is this a good price?

Pete

I'm currently doing the evening class Dayskipper course which started in September and finishes at the end of March and cost £125. I think £245 is probably the going rate for the intensive course, but my concern would be assimilating so much information in just four days. Admittedly I started the course with hardly any previous knowledge but even for an experienced boater I reckon you'd be pretty hard pressed to cope within such a tight time frame. And that's even before you start the homework!

Having said that, although I think it's an excellent course I must admit it is now starting to drag a bit after so many weeks and I'm looking forward to finishing it. For someone with your obsession with speed, Suzuki, that may well be an important consideration One other point you need to check is whether the course includes the new GPS/electronics section, because the RYA has postponed its introduction. Probably worth waiting for a course that incorporates it.

For the intensive course that seems a good price. I was quoted £300 for 5 days two years ago in the NW. How you get through it all in 4 days is beyond me though!
Some places will do the course over three weekends, this at least gives you time during the week to study and complete the 13 exercises you HAVE to do to complete the course.

As Ian knows, the main reason for doing this course is due to the fact that my arm is broken & therefore I'm not able to do anything (paintballing included)!!
I 'need' to do my VHF Course, & after calling Ian @ Old Harbour Divers who did my Advanced PB (really good course) I've been offered Friday (just me).
He then mentioned that he has a Day Skipper Course starting this weekend with just 1 other student on it. The other weekend date is flexible, as we can join other course dates if required.

So it looks as if I'll be busy this weekend!

Injuries....!

Nope, that was last years 'mishap'...

Cold tyres + too much right hand = HIGHSIDE

followed by bike rolling down the road after me then landing on my foot & Breaking my heel. Expensive on the wallet also!

Cue this year.
4 days into my 8 day holiday.
I 'crashed' (note the theme here) my snowboard twice in 15 minutes. On the first jump, I just damaged my arm, the 2nd jump did it in & I had to get off the mountain on the BLUE RUNS. Boy, was my head held in shame!!!

Have some pics of some snowboarding from last years hols if anyones interested!!

Pete

Typically this is a 5 day course (or 6 days if over weekends) and i agree with the statement that covering the course over four days (if its done properly) is a tough call.

There is another thread somewhere on the merits of intensive courses Vs evening classes.

We charge £300 for the 5 days so £245 is comparable

Regards

Paul

PS: There's no reason the electronic side cannot be covered on the course so do ensure it is.

Good news

well, spoke to Ian (www.oldharbourdiveschool.co.uk/home.php) this morning about it & he said that it will be the 'new' course which includes the GPS / electronics bit!!
As The 2 weekends are not consectutive & there are only 2 people on this I am going to do this course. Booked it this morning .
