Yeah I know it was all because of the Harbour Master. I'm just saying the knock on effect nearly cost us the channel and when you're running a 250hp with a heavy load it does not like speeding up and slowing down all the time.

As for those who are getting about as excited as a local sailing club Kippers section about the lifejackets - at the briefing Officer of the Day (Sarah D.) said only necessary at the start for good PR and then optional. I think given the conditions there was nothing wrong with removing them.

As for cost I think it was cheap considering what was laid on. The price only has to go up next year to continue growing the event forward. Those who might find it a little out of their budgets can always volunteer for safety boat or pace boat - I'm sure Ed would be delighted to have your support.

Rib raid sounds fun! Good luck with that!

Come on now Eupa, get with the programme. You should be part of the Gumball/Deaville Rally, not some parallel event where you can spend all your time making notes and tut-tutting about the Gumballers fun. We'd all come back to find you've clamped our trailers.

No Eupa, you must take part and find out what what it's like to go to parties, and have some enjoyment by throwing the rule book away. Loosen up, you never know might like it. I know you'd be very welcome.

A life saving device is good PR that can be dispensed with once we are in the channel.

Are you sure that this is the responsible message you want to give as organiser or at least the defender of the rally on RibNet against the dissenters!!

I've been involved in loads of rescues where the people have said, "but when I set out it was nice" or "there should have been enough petrol"

Why was it "good for PR to wear them"?

Were you trying to create an image which was not, in fact, representative of your philosophies? Is this not then a con? Who were you trying to con and why please?

I just want to know who (what) I'm dealing with here.

That's my boy, Roy. An altenative /parallel event would be great. Jono- think it over . I understand that Ed is a great sailor and it seems such a waste of talent that he is involved with.....................

I dont think anyone on the rally ran aground and certainly I dont think anyone called the RNLI. (We had the Cougar Rescue Rib for that). The Spectre of Defeat II had to put into Whitstable for an emergency fuel stop and therefore we were the last boat along the Thames Channel at low tide.

The southern channel which we were taking was fairly narrow and a difficult pilotage and we did see a cruiser high and dry and the sand banks just past a cardinal mark however they were nothing to do with us. Do you have any details from the RNLI station who it was or where it was?

As for the comment about 'oh it looked nice when we set off' that applies to when you leave without your lifejackets and therefore when it gets rough cant whip them out of a locker and put them straight on. I'm starting to suspect a little grounding in sailing might do a lot of you some good. Or is the fast track into becoming a nerd just going out and buying some flash rib and thinking you know it all?

IMHO going out in any powerboat with out a life jacket on is fool hardy.

Sailing and powerboating are very very different.
I have done both as have a large number of the members on here.
Some are better than other at it (just read my latest issue of the news letter from the Minnis Bay sailing club )

I fail to see how tacking at 6-8 knots is the same as a tight turn at 25.
Or coming off a wave at 30 knots compared to say 14 in a sail boat
Maybe you could explain?

When things go wrong in a powerboat it goes wrong faster.
No time to put a jacket on, its over in seconds.

Again IMHO any powerboat event organiser would neglegent not to insist that jackets are worn.

I am certainly insisting they are worn for the FOLLY GUMBALL

Yes of course the difference between sailing and ribbing/ motor boating

On a yacht the most useless things to have are a lawnmower, an umbrella and a naval officer.

On a rib/ motorboat the most useless things to have are a lawnmower, an umbrella and a spotter off rib.net!!!

Havoc?...you must mean getting everything as tightly regulated as possible, with every agency there is...PLA, Police, Enviroment Agency, Coast Guard, RNLI, RSPCA, Transport for London, Traffic Warden Association....

Just my standard attire when ribbing.. A pair of M&S chinons, a dark blue sweat shirt, a pair of Caterpillar boots and a LIFEJACKET at all times.
