Direct Assessment

Could someone help, please.

Is there someone based out of Southampton, Portsmouth, Cowes or Bembridge that could do me a direct assessment for at least Level 2, or even better, Level 2 + Safety Boat.

I used to have the RYA Sportsboat Award with Rescue Endorsement which also gave me an ICC, but I've lost it in the house move a few years back and I'd like to be able to hire the odd RIB to take the twins out in this summer.

I have a strong boating CV and other relevant qualifications which I'll happily write up for you, discuss with you and of course demonstrate to whatever degree required to pass.

I could sign up for a full course - but it'd just be a waste of everyone's time. Not asking for a freebie or anything dodgy either - happy to pay for a proper assessment.

Many thanks
Matt

Just about any RYA training centre should be able to do this for you. I'd recommend Ocean Sports in Southampton.

Absolutely. But I’d sooner go with a ribnetter

Level 2 you can do as a direct assessment (which would get you your ICC), but not Safety Boat - that would have to be a full course.

As above, Tec Rec are active on here, and there did used to be a few others advertising in the Solent area, but maybe not recently.

I thought it might be worth writing a few words about my day doing a direct assessment PB2 with Steve from Tec Rec.

There are 2 types of teachers in the world - those who teach you enough to pass the exam and those who teach you to be the best they can possibly get you to be. I had the latter when I did my driving test many years ago which made the driving test a breeze and Steve is cut from the same cloth.

Steve's knowledge is expansive, not just of Ribs & boating, but also of methods & techniques to effectively teach people too.
I expected a day where pretty much I just would show I know the front end of the boat from the back, but instead it was actually pretty full on, right until the end. I liked that - an important thing about the sea is to never assume you know it all and always keep learning, so even though I've spent most of my life on or around the water - I still learnt some interesting bits. And it was just nice to be out on the water too.

Most notable was I'd either forgotten, or never knew, how to map out the tide heights using the tide table and a chart before and after high water. And also, mostly because I'd never looked, that southampton has a double high tide!

Anyway, all in all an interesting and useful day - whether you're looking for a refresher in any subject (he teaches many, check the website) or starting from scratch. We also managed to get virtually the first nice weather day of the year. Bonza!

Well recommended.

Sounds like a good result. Steve’s a long time RIBnet trade member too
