Thanks for all the helpful replies, and I now know who wrote that article in RIB int Dave! Special thanks to Brian C; I have been in contact with Britannia and they cover trailers up to 8m in length (excluding the tow vehicle) provided it is fitted with a 50mm tow hitch. The trailer in its own right is covered for breakdown - I was told that they will recover your trailer whilst you can drive on to your destination
A discussion like this made sure that I knew the right questions to ask (I hope!!)

UPDATE. I've just renewed with International Breakdown today and verified the size limitations with the operator. They say 7m long x 3m high x 2.5m wide is the maximum dimensions. My trailer is within those limitations but the outboard in its upright position sticks out some 50 odd cms. I guess they don't carry a tapemeasure. The operator also confirmed if the axle fell off or the bearings collapsed I would still be recovered. Thats one less thing to worry about this year.

My car insurance is with Liverpool Victoria, now my breakdown cover is aswell.

They have no max length for a trailer. (checked verbal and read all the T&C)

just check to make sure the trailer is independantly covered as well as the tow vehicle, so if trailer failed and couldnt be repaired, then the trailer would be recovered to an adress in the uk, while you carried on with the journey

From your guidance I made sure I asked this question. Although it would be nice to see it in print somewhere on their web site. I wonder if the paperwork that comes through states anything about trailer cover.
I got the impression that the recovery is sub contracted so if the sub contracter is changed maybe we'll hit problems then.

Insured Vehicle
The vehicle, details of which have been provided to us, being one of the following: a motorcycle, car,
estate car, light van or 4x4 sport utility vehicle and motorhome, used for domestic use only (unless the
appropriate premium has been paid for commercial use) which does not exceed the following weight
and dimensions (including any load you are carrying): 2,500kgs GVW; (or, when the additional
supplement was paid, 3500 kgs), length 7 metres; height 3 metres and width 2.25 metres. Also
covered under this Policy is any caravan or trailer being towed by the Insured vehicle which does not
exceed the above weight and size dimensions - including any load.

You shall carry a serviceable spare tyre and locking wheel nut key at all times for the insured
vehicle and or caravan or trailer.
