Took the family out with the dog for her first boat ride, she did great. It was also my older sons first ocean trip in the new zodiac.
As for the whales there was a ton of activity, must have been at least a dozen humpbacks just a half mile out of the harbor. Also swarms of dolphins, a hundred or more, and little herds of sea lions. My boys were really impressed, this was their first close encounter.
Unfortunately the whales don't pose well for pictures but the boys probably got some good ones of the dolphins right next to the boat.
Ramp in Morro Bay. The whales are hanging around just offshore, 2-3 miles from the harbor.
We had the greatest evening. This went on for an hour or more. We just drifted and the whales put on a show all around. We had two surface about 10 yards behind the boat but I missed it
Here's some good video just mind my wife's language.
Whales, sea lions, and dolphins, AWESOME! All the day needed was an underwater adventure to make it even better...says a scuba diver
The coasts here are truly magnificent. We spent the weekend diving in Mendocino County, and although no whales nor dolphins were spotted, We did get to see plenty of harbor seals and sea lions. We also took a tour up Big River and the Albion River, where we saw tons of birds, like egrets, blue heron, and four peregrine falcons.
The Gaviota State Park hoist is still functioning as far as I know. They raised the price for the launch permit though to a ridiculous amount. They are also pretty stringent on lifting setup, with everything having to be certified (Not a bad thing though).
Gaviota is closed. They lost the 50' of pier ocean side of the hoist last winter, thought they were going to lose the hoist. Anyway they have a 20' boat limit.
