I'm sorry but there are a number of boat names that are simply offensive, and I fail to understand why they are seen as amusing.

When emblazoned down the side of a boat in huge letters, it is disrespectfull to those who don't want to see this and possibly have to explain the meaning to their children.

This country needs to go back to gentler times...would Kenneth Grahame have named the boat in Wind in the Willows, Blue Job? I don't think so.

I am personally not interested in your comments on the right and wrong's of boat names. Although the names you mention are unacceptable and would probably be refused onto the Class 1 Register.

Shaven heads does not mean 1970's skin heads. Ear rings pre date the Yacht club wafi sailors and were worn by real sailors on square riggers and necklaces, good god man get a life.

Like Lostboy I too wear a sharks tooth. I have also completed well in excess of 200000 miles at sea on Sail and power as Captain. I believe in the correct etiquette at sea but to label someone due to their haircut..Maybe you need to come out of the dark ages

My boats called "Danny Boy" so call yours "Broadsword" and we can do a Where Eagles Dare impression.

Or "Water Wings" (it is kinda like wearing armbands being in a rib after all )

There is a valid point behind being dull though, anything that seems funny/cool at the time will probably wear thin after a couple of years especially if you feel a pillock saying it on the radio (good test there - if you had to call the coastguard/Navy would you feel a pillock saying the name and would you just know they were saying "oh my gawd its another one of them"?). A bit like buying a car in some hideous shade of lime green, turquoise or fluorescent orange which seemed really cool and stood out in the showroom. Two years down the line you just wish you had got a black one.

Anything that sounds like it might be a Navy ship or a guided missile is probably what I would lean towards if I ever got a new boat. Broadsword is good (Type 23 IIRC?)

We must be talking about a different one. There is a wreak of the Normandie coast that is either called Broadsword or is a Broadsword, i'm not too sure which it is now. It was either an English or American ship.

I think one should be very careful about using the exact name of of a current or ex RN ship. You could cause confusion on VHF and in particular piss off some Navy people. I personally think that there are some wonderful RN ship names. But??? would you call your boat "Hood" "Ark Royal" " Dreadnought" " Illustrious" etc. etc. That would be very disrespectful. My boat is called "Inde" but I would not dream of calling it " Indefatigable"

However, it would be OK to call your boat Bismark or Belgrano.
