drain sock or elephants trunk

Are there any ribs out there in use that do NOT have a drain sock or elephants trunk.

Or is this a must have item even though one may or will have a bilge pump.

I'd consider them a must.

You'd need a huge bilge pump to clear water on deck as fast.

But they must have a way to drop them quickly and easily.

I dont - but do have 2 very similar to the 68mm ones. With bung in most of the time as they leak water in if not moving.

If I ever get so much water in the boat to need more (and the 2 bilge pumps) I shouldn't be out & deserve to sink ..........

They look good to me, and appear good value.

Although they are very simple to make by laying up glassfibre around a drainpipe(inside for a neater outside finish) and gluing up a tube out of a rectangle of hypalon.

I've got two 68mm, if I was to fit my boat out again I'd get the 110mm, just personal preference.

My mates Narwahl doesn't it has a flap on some bungee cord that in theory lets water out not in.

The Force 4 had various forms of one way valve instead, the best of which was a simple neoprene and aluminium flap over the hole.

The later ball valve design only needed a small piece of seaweed or gravel off the beach to breath on it before it started leaking.

Interesting...
Never knew that the one on mine must have been removed. It just had a normal plastic bung

RIBase
My Valiant DR 490 did not have trunks installed. It has a 50mm hole with a rubber flap which worked to let water in or out of the boat. I replaced it with the trunk from the rub shop and now I have comfort in knowing that I can ship a large amound of water if required. It is a small rib thus one of these is sufficent for me. I use the boat of the west coast of Ireland where the sea conditions can be a bit lively

My old SR didn't, and had I not exchanged it for the Humber, It would now have a set! Humber had one and the other blocked up for a 'leccy pump. Suffice to say the second one has now been reinstated.

They have the advantage that they work as long as you are moving, and as said can dump a lot of water very quicky. Usually a good idea to run the release (lift) line to the console so you can work them at a moment's notice. Just my opinion, but the short cord & jam cleat on the transom is one small step above a chocolate fireguard.......
