Hi,

Great location for Solent boating (although I do say so myself)

Of the 3 I am aware of:

KB boat park is great with it's location near the entrance to portsmouth, pretty much next to the wightlink terminal and easy access in to the solent. But you do have to drive right through the middle of portsmouth to get there.

Trafalgar is at the top end of portsmouth - near port solent. Bit further to go, but portsmouth does have a decent speed limit so while you're not on the plane, it doesn't take forever to get there, and is an interesting run through the harbour.

Southampton dry stack on to the itchen is decent, including an excellent on site school (tec rec coaching). Downside is it's a bit of a drag up the itchen (6 knots), but on the upside, if you fancy a bit of a go and the solent's a bit choppy, you're launching into southampton water, which in many cases is enough for a bit of messing around on the water, esp if you have kids - ie you can give them a run from the itchen down the hamble for lunch without getting involved in the solent snot.

And as a curve ball - I launch both my boats from drivers dry berthing and keep one of them there.
They're not a forklift setup, they are a crane & boat mover - so you pay storage and each launch is extra.
But as an infrequent boater, this works for me!

I keep mine at Southampton Dry Stack and I would definitely recommend it. You give them a call with about an hours notice, they remove the cover and put you in the water. On the way back in, tie up at the pontoon, turn your batteries off and leave. They'll take the boat out of the water, give it a wash down, put the cover on and put it safely away.

If you give them a call, they'll give you a price.

They are also a friendly bunch.

As Matt says it's about 30 minutes'ish up the Itchen and we tend to use the time to get stuff packed up or squared away.

Thank you, I have spoken with Chris at SDS yes they seem a nice bunch it is the cheapest I have found although nothing cheap about drystack but it is the only realistic way I would get the use from the boat as I can't be doing with the trailer and parking it etc.

I’ve literally just paid my deposit to SDS an hour ago as I’m taking ownership of my boat tomorrow. All the pluses and minuses of the various dry stacks are in this thread as far as my investigations go. Also it’s the closest to the cheapest petrol in the Solent area (Hythe marina) if you’ve got inboard tanks.

I spoke with the main guy at KB boat park who was extremely helpful, what has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons is he strongly advised buying a boat of 6mts for the Solent due to the chop.
I had really set my sights on a 5mtr boat as this would keep costs down engine etc and launching and recover on my own would be very easy should i want to take the boat away.
Also getting into braked trailer and addition maintenance with larger boat.

KB boat park prices start at 6mtrs so little point in going there with a 5mtr boat.
Not in a hurry as the winter looms now so will hold fire for now.

Everything else being equal, a longer hull is always better in the snot.
