durabuild alternative/ plug top coat

Ive made a single plug for a console extension. Its ready for painting, and my intention was to make a mould from the plug so I can get a good finish, being a one off im not sure if this is cost effective. However is there a paint solution, some sort of 2 pack maybe that is cheaper than 2 tins of durabuild?? I thought about skinning it with formica but the shapes a bit complicated.

i would use the proper stuff, some 2 packs will pickle when you put gell near them, durabuild is easy to flat and polish so will save you time, just as information you can use button polish on small bare patch's and it will seal mdf
