E5 Fuel Availability
Hello all,
I was wondering how those of you with untrailable boats re-fueled with unleaded E5 fuel? Most of the areas I've visited including my local marina (Mylor, Cornwall) only stock diesel and E10 unleaded.
With outboard engines becoming more popular on larger boats there's got to be an easy solution to this problem?
This is particularly frustrating when I travelled from Mylor to the IOW for a weeks holiday by sea. Once there I couldn't find anywhere to refuel and ended up hiring a van to do shuttles back and forth between the petrol station and marina.
Has anyone else encountered this problem recently?
Kind Regards

Just run the bog standard E10, personally I think there’s a lot of unfounded hysteria around E10. I use the stuff in my 180l RC inboard tank, brim it at the end of the season & the DF 140 doesn’t seem to object. Just make sure you have a good water separating filter, which is SOP regardless of which fuel you use.

Cheers for the reply,
I run a G1 Evinrude E-Tec Outboard on my rig. I've been told not to run E10 due to known problems it's causes with this type of engine. So far my ob has been 100% reliable over the last 4 years and i don't want to chance using E10 to spoil its reliability, let alone the cost of replacement parts.

I used to have a 6.4 with twin 115hp Etecs. I ran whatever was available. I had Parker 2micron filter/separators. Add a capfull of XD100 to each 20l of fuel when you fill up. The problem with ethanol is it’s dry & reduces the lubricity of the petrol. This can cause problems with the injectors. The shot of XD100 helps lubricate the injectors.

Is that the reason you see those Evinrude etecs going cheap on ebay. There is one at the moment ( needs tilt sensor apparently) .

Our Suzuki outboards from 2011 will run on E10 but when the boat was built in 2011 it was obviously not envisaged that the UK would switch to E10 so the fuel system was not built to handle it.
We fill up at mayflower marina fuel pontoon in Plymouth and all of their unleaded is E5 and they have no plan to switch to E10 that I know of.

I'm in Southampton and I searched for a fuel berth with E5... but found nothing. To make it worse MDL was charging £2.20/L of E10 at hythe!!!
Ended up with my 2 portable tanks on a sack truck to the texaco 5mins walk away... E5 at £1.64/L [emoji1787]

That may work but that's an awful lot of XD100 I'll get through? Especially seeing its so expensive now?

I think there's a couple of reasons they're going cheapish. People are afraid of parts availability, finding the right supplier is key. I've just had the hydraulic ram and trim engine replaced on my Evinrude and although not cheap it was ordered and fitted within 7 weeks. I was expecting a longer wait seeing the manufacturer no longer makes OB's?
I can only talk from personal experience but my Evinrude has been more reliable than my Honda OB despite the mixed reviews from Evinrude customers

I used to get mine from South Coast Marine, they were very competitive.

All U.K. standard unleaded is labelled as E10 all U.K. super unleaded is labelled as E5
What’s it in the tank varies if it’s regular unleaded it’s probbaky E10 if it’s super could be E5 or E0
May supercharged Yamaha ran fine on either as it was designed to my bone supercharger Yamaha likewise
Plenty of snake oil on the market to make you sleep better …..

But if he needs E5 (i.e. maximum 5% ethanol), and wants it waterside, then knowing that a Shell Garage might sell 97ron Super Unleaded that is E0/E5 is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard surely?

You have to check with the station the specifics esso super in some parts of the U.K. is E0 but don’t get branded forecourts on the water

Cheers for all your input. I've just finished making a fuel housing for x3 20ltr fuel can's (for underneath the leaning post) to go with the long range internal fuel tank in my 07 Open Pro 550. I figured that will help slightly and get me from Falmouth to Plymouth and back no problem. It's nice to know that I can get E5 at Plymouth for when I visit the IOW later on in the year. Thanks all for your help..
