ebay outboard sales?

why do sellers pretend that they know bugger all about engines but have a picture of an outboard mounted on a stand that can only be for mounting outboards on?
i have built a westfield v8 kitcar and it is sitting in the garage but i dont have an engine hoist
example- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...39#description
would you avoid an engine like this?

I'd avoid that engine anyway-they were bloody awful when new and even worse now they are ancient!

i thought mercury/mariner/yamaha 2 strokes all came from the same factory and were sold under different names, i must admit that i do know bugger all about outboards so if you would kindly point me in the right direction i would be grateful,
cheers, mark.

Erm...thats a big answer to a small question. Here's part of it-if you find something else then just ask.

If it's got a wraparound cowl it's a Mercury. If it's got a plastic 'clamshell' type cowl it's also a Mercury.
If it's 40hp and has 2 cylinders and a lift-off cowl and badged Mariner, it's a Yamaha.
If it's 48 or 55hp and 2 cylinders badged Mariner it's a Yamaha.

That particular motor is a Mercury 402. Think that one's around 1979-81 from the colours.Avoid them. He's set the reserve at more than it's worth-it's at about the right price for a really good one now.

Also often includes "I'm selling this for a friend so I don't know much about it"

if you dont know much about outboards then take someone along to look at a possible engine for you that does

repairs on outboards can run into lots and lots of money

take care,
