elephant trunk

I replaced my elephants trunk on my rib last year but I think its too short. I haven't tried it out yet but I feel that it will be below water in any sort of chop. The new one measures 500mm and my old one is 29 inches (740mm). Does anyone do a longer one as standard or do I have to get one made up?

Make it yourself.

Roll of lining wall paper, strip off enough to get the diameter to the diameter of your trunk. Some sellotape to hold it together and use that as a former to roll the hypalon round. Sorted

Assuming you only deploy the trunk when needed I.e. When the boat is swamped, it shouldn't be a problem when it's "stowed" it should self seal

Hi
Sorry for the delay in replying I was at that other great money pit called farming . I don't have any hypalon so I would have to order some and I thought it would be as easy to buy I already made up. I will try what I have first and see if its ok.

Hi Yes I only use it when its rough. I need to get the boat in the water and see how it is. It is new and stiff and looks short, but hopefully it will be ok. Nothing worse than reversing the boat into the water and the "tee hee" brigade telling you the water should be on the outside!

In 30 years of RIB ownership, I bet I've only used the bailers about a dozen times in anger. I don't run with them down as a matter of course & the bilge pump copes with any water that gets in the boat.

Guess it depends on the boat my delta has 2 bilge pumps one under the sub hull the other in the engine bay, neither drain the deck you need to deploy both trunks to clear the deck.If you only use one water is trapped down the side of the engine box

Get a bit plastic pipe the same diameter as the inside the trunk and use a jubilee clip to seal it temporarily. I did this on my Humber when I found out when it rained the battery went flat, the bilge pump outlet pumped the water straight back into the trunk, Still there after 3 years!

A bit strange as I believe Henshaws made the tubes for Coastline and presumably the original trunk.

Are you sure 500mm isn't long enough? I'm almost certain the one I replaced on my Cobra is that length and it's perfect. When pulled up to it sits just above the transom and when deployed, empties easily. Like PD says, it's very rare I need to use it in spite of bringing several gallons is sea in when coming up from a dive. 2 bilge pumps in the well cope easily.

I won't be certain until I put the boat in the water and see how it behaves. The old one measured 740mm OR 29" and sat just on the lip[ of the transom. The new one sits a couple of inches below the edge of the transom in direct line with the bilge pump pipe so I can see a scenario of the bilge pumping the water back down the sock.

There's others quoting same price personally I don't think it will be an issue when the trunk is bent its a fairly good seal

I used a length of lay flat hose for mine. You can usually buy it by the meter.
