Elephant trunk fitting

I need to replace the elephant trunks on my Ribeye and it appears the old ones were glued onto the tube coming out of the transom with impact adhesive or similar, do the replacements need to be glued on or will a jubilee clip or two on each one do the job?

Personally I went with both. They’re a tightish fit so you’ll probably find you need to slip on ‘wet’ rather than ‘tacky’. I did first coat let dry to touch, second coat then slipped on and tightened up stainless clip over. No issues found.

Hi, I fitted one to my Ribcraft last season. I bought it from RIB shop, they leave the last couple of inches of the seam unglued, so it is easier to slip over the short tube that is on the transom,, you just slip it over the tacky glue then glue that last bit of the seam, if that makes sense. Also I used a heat gun on the old trunk to breakdown the glue to get the old one off. I didn't use a jubilee clip as was happy with my gluing job. They do different size diameter trunks, so measure yours before you order

Sounds like a better job. Getting those gluing conditions right here in Scotland not so easy though!

You really don't want to lose an Elephants trunk that comes unglued, as obviously you end up with a big hole in the boat, normally below the waterline.

So mine are glued with a Jubilee clip over the top as well.

Mine leaked from new, found it leaked from where trunk overlapped.
not glued on just held by jubilee clip.
took off and put sealant along join not perfect but better.
don`t use it as not all water drains away,so have fitted bilge pump.
what glue do you use,is it easy to remove.

Thanks for the replies, sounds like glue and jubilee clips are the way to go!

I’ve also noticed the sealant around the tube the trunk goes on has perished and there’s a small crack around it, it’s not taking on much water (if any) from this but obviously want to sort it. What sort of sealant should I use? Is sikaflex ok or should it be marine silicone?

It’s more for removing big amounts of water so bilge pump better for small amounts. I’d only deploy if it’s pretty wild and You expect decent amounts over the side. That or a good stuffing ! Due to the sucking effect of the trailing trunk it’ll remove very large amounts of water pretty dam quick. Yes sikaflex [emoji1305]

In my opinion there is no need for the jubilee if the gluing job has been done right. It’s only glue that holds the tubes together and keeps them stuck to your hull.

If you are going to use a sealant/adhesive I’d recommend the Sikaflex 291i.
