Brilliant - it's such a shame she's finishing - probably the last liner. All the new ones are just cruise ships.
When I first heard about the plans for it in Dubai they said they would restore it to it's original splendour. Now they say they are ripping out decks and even removing the funnels to make high rise pent houses - sacrilege!!!

It's not all bad, i believe Cunnard are donating spares and hard to find imperial / BA bits and bobs to the Maid of the Loch on Loch Lomond.

Forget the sentiment. The QE2 has had her day. She probably costs a small fortune to run. Modern cruise ships can carry more people, offer more facilities and appeal to a younger audience. It's off to Dubai for the old girl.

I think anyone who has been on the QE2 will find it hard to lose the sentimental value that came with such an experience.
To see her have her funnel removed etc will be sad to see, but it just wasn't financially viable to run and needed a major refurbishment.
But as had been said, and even words from the captain, it may be better that it has $100 million spent on it in Dubai ratehr than scrapped or sold to a Greek shipping firm as a ferry.
A sad time but not alot can be done now!

Don't mention the B word!! Even the word Minehead still brings back visions of prisoner of war camps!
I'm just sorry I never got to see her. Seems a shame to me but s'pose it had to happen sometime.

Sadly not - had hoped to before she went. My mate's parents have been on her many times - and also the new Queen Mary and a load of others. They much prefered the old QE2 and from what i have seen of their pics and videos I agree.
I watched a prog once about carnival cruises who now own Cunard and I was horrified. The way they operate is exactly like Bultins - it may appeal to a lot of people but it's my idea of hell on Earth!!!

I would have thought most people would know someone who has been on this ship - she has carried over 2.5million passengers!!!

I have and I found it quite easy to lose the sentimental value. I wasn't disapointed but I wasn't very impressed with the interior.finish, I didn't see it as perticularly luxurious.
At the end of the day it's an old ship that isn't cost effective to run anymore, I think I miss Concorde more but understand why she bit the dust!
I think what's happened to her is quite fitting for a famous old ship, she's continuing to have a life and there is nothin wrong with what happenned to the Queen Mary.
I must admit it seem more appropriate for the funnel to be cut off if the ship went to Israel
It's a more noble end than the Torrey Canyon had that's for sure at least the QE2's driver got away with running aground twice
Before you open your mouth gArfie no I wasn't a fkkn stowaway

the new QM2 is still definitely a liner and pretty spectacular bit of kit! Not that I've been on her but saw the film on Discovery channel and seen her on the water.
I about the QE2's funnel being stripped off too. My reaction was that taking the funnel off really destroys the ship's lines - it will turn her into little more than a hulk to look at. Like stripping the masts from a sailing ship
