Fatal boat crash in Solent

Awful event today
Girl, 15, dies in Southampton boat crash https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-53874700

2020 seems to be a very bad year for incidents on the water

My thoughts very much with those involved.

With the weather today not exactly being conducive to squeezing 12 people into a leisure rib for a picnic, perhaps a commercial operator?

It was a Southampton Based Commercial Operator. Hit NW Netley Buoy. I believe the boat is licensed to carry 12 people, if not more.

Front port side end smashed in, one fatality and several more seriously injured, tragic for all.

Thoughts are with the family of the daughter that has been lost.

Coded for 12+2 as I understand it. An Ocean village based charter company out on a “thrill trip” as advertised on their website. Will be interesting to learn the details of what happened when the MAIB publish their findings. I was out briefly on Southampton water yesterday and the conditions weren’t exactly ideal for running a high speed charter, although I it sounds like it was another factor that caused the collision.

Absolutely tragic. Heart goes out to the family when I read about it.

The MAIB report will be thorough, although it takes time. Just looked at their current investigations, and there's around 15 so far this year.

Very, very sad and will no doubt have far reaching effects by the time the MAIB finish and make recommendations to the RYA - PB2CE will be probably changed and need to include a new course for 'high speed pax ops' ie commercial thrill rides.....

Just hope that it was a one off and not a deeper issue re training / standards - The operator I have worked for doing charters has a very strict SOP on what you can and cant do in regards to 'showing how good you are as a skipper'...

Condolences to family and thoughts are with operator and skipper who will be going through absolute hell mentally....

I do understand how it's possible to misjudge an individual wave, or find yourself in snotty conditions worse than forecast. But hitting one of those buoys, in daylight, seems odd. Having seen them on the water, they always seem competent - I wonder if it was just their SOP to use some of the nav marks to go round - but snotty weather & speed caused the boat to hook into the buoy as they rounded it. The MAIB report will be interesting. And there's always a reminder to everyone - never, ever, take anything for granted on the water, no matter how many times you've done something before.

There’s loads of reasons it might have happened, medical issue for the skipper, mechanical failure on the boat, best not to speculate until the report comes out.

Indeed. Clearly something significant happened to cause the collision - but suspect it won’t be clear until the MAIB report is out since it seems such an unlikely accident on the face of it.

As a father and boater, the thought of this tragedy is too dreadful to contemplate.
Accidents do happen and when they do, they happen very quickly.
Often, speed and a lack of concentration and experience are factors. I can't pretend I've not had 'moments' myself but fortunately these had good endings.
I will add that the majority of inshore collisions involve Jet Skis which are handed from user to user (no guarantees of any experience) as they take it in turns to blast round the bay at high speed with little regard for other water users.
Days out on the water should be fun but sometimes, sadly, they are not.

Truly tragic. Collisions in adverse conditions are a real risk. As the video below mentions, even the RNLI themselves had 3 collisions in 2015. It is worth watching.

Can you back that statement up with some actual facts please
