Fill disused fuel tanks with styrofoam?

Hi there,

I have an ancient 7.5m Delta that doesn't use the integral fuel tanks. It also leaks a bit - it's a work in progress as I only bought it this year. I was just wondering on your thoughts of filling the old fuel tanks with styrofoam beads so that a) water couldn't fill the space b) extra and lightwright bouyancy?

It's more of a thought experiment right now to be honest.

Thanks!

If the tanks are sound & watertight, adding styrofoam will actually add weight & reduce buoyancy.

I'd cut the floor open and repair or replace the tanks, as having more fuel lower in the boat is best.

As most leaks occur in the bottom of the tank, capping the fill, vent, and fuel line will create something of an air bubble inside. Of course it could have a hole in the top, but a camera should help reveal more. Than again putting a camera inside the fuel tank thru the fuel sending unit hole should reveal what failed.

Oh noes! That's not going to work - the water will just fill up the spaces between the beads and slow you down. Do the right thing and remove or replace the tanks. If you are determined to retain those tanks, consider a closed cell foam.

It won't slow him down as much as if the beads were not there... as there will be less water... ... initially

Styrofoam compresses.
Styrofoam can absorb a bit of water

You now have wet squashed foam in the tank...
