Fitting new fuel sender

Current sender for inboard tank packed in last week and previous to that was leaking at rubber seal between bolting plate and top of tank (slight tightening of bolts made little difference). New sender just arrived in the post but no instructions. Simple enough to fit but my question is: Should I use an additional sealant on seal (if so - what is recommended) or just fix as is.
I was just thinking that this may lessen chances of leaks in future but then again existing sender (presumably factory fitted) does not appear to have had anything added.
Thanks for any info.
