Fuel At Cowes

Marine Support & Towage, the fuel barge just above the floating bridge, is CLOSING. [business for sale]

At this stage, the only other place to get fuel will be Lallows, adjacent to Cowes Yacht Haven. I am not sure how they operate over the weekends.

Bummer.

Andy

The buisness has been for sale for a while but has some issues because of the Redevelopment plans, which I cannot post on a public forum.

Have sent you a PM

Nasher.

I think Lallows is open most of the time - I have never had an issues with getting fuel from them at the weekends etc. I think the owners live at the back of the yard, and there is a bell on the fuel pontoon which lets them know if you are waiting. Only trouble is they seem to be a lot more expensive.

Getting fuel is becoming harder and harder in the Solent. The Gosport fuel pontoon hasn't been selling petrol for a couple of weeks now and it's set to stay like that - they've got major problems with their pipes which need to be replaced. The only places to get petrol in the Eastern Solent are Port Solent, and Lallows in Cowes.

They don't live there, but pretty sure they're nearby.
I did some work with Lallows a while back - a really nice bunch of guys.
What most people don't realise is that most of the waterside fuel berths have to pay MORE for their fuel than we pay to buy it from a tescos, bp etc.

The fuel barge that is being referred to is now formally closed, and therefore the only available place for fuel is now Lallows Boatyard, which is between Shepards and the Yacht Haven. It is going to be interesting when the season starts, and can see Cowes running out of fuel.

More work for those independent lifeboats, just as well as the Ventures Search and Rescue are available at the weekends to give you a hand then

Pete

Good one Pete. We hardly ever are called out to boats that have run out of fuel.

Interesting, when I did my PB2 it was claimed that the most common cause for lifeboat (presumably RNLI) call outs to powerboats was running out of fuel. So what are your most common shouts - that we could learn lessons from and avoid ourselves?

Our most common call outs are boats that have broken down,or have gone aground. Of late our call outs have been searches for missing people. We have had 3 in the last 5 weeks. During Cowes week and other busy sailing periods we have head wounds and trapped fingers from being jammedin winches.

Simon
Its amazing that no one has banned yachts with all that flappy stuff and places to trap fingers and bang heads. Are the breakdowns usually serious unexpected failure or trivial / poor maintainence issues?

We are not engineers so would not like to comment, but it would be nice if more of the boating population joined sea start, as we as an emergency service are being used for the wrong reason.
