Fuel Tank Question

Hi All,

Apologies if this isn't in the right area. Ive had a bit of a lightbulb moment with a small Issue I had with my quicksilver fuel tank and am thinking of designing an after market part.

Can I have a rough poll of what outboard/removable fuel tanks you all use please to investigate other tanks/fittings to improve on my idea?

Thanks in advance!

While I'm at it then, could you describe the issues please? I'm doing a test run this morning on v1 of my idea.

Mostly leaks through the air vent.

Had a 25L one the whole fuel gauge + window popped out.

And the fact that the caps have almost no rib type features to make it easy to open them with cold hands!

Apart form that they're fine!

Cheers, Im working on the opening of the vent at the moment. Perhaps I can sort something for the opening with cold hands.

I had a hulk tank which I threw out. I may have to get another to look at and see how to improve it.

Hulk 22L

We've recently swapped the connectors out for more sturdy ones.

For those with the hunk tanks, is this the cap?
NEW 12L 22L 30L HULK OUTBOARD FUEL TANK CAP | eBay

And if possible you'd all like to have an add on to make it easier to unscrew withy cold hands and something to prevent water/spray ingress into the tank?

Quicksilver. I'm having problems with the engine not idling reliably and what I believe are airlocks in the fuel pipe.
My current thinking is that this is down to air being sucked into the pickup tubes but replacements seem hard to find (&/or overpriced).
If you have a solution to this, I'd be interested!

Cheers,
W.

Fuel Tank Question

I use a flexi tank at the moment , but before that ran the standard plastic fuel tank that came new with the Tohatsu ,
only problem i had with that was after the 1st year i drained off the carb & it had very small tiny bright white pieces (toothpaste ) in the discarded fuel .
On closer investigation i traced it back to the excess white sealant used at the factory on the tank fuel pickup pipe which had passed through the strainer
Apart from the fuel bulb which occasionally drew air at times though to be fair being a very small sib its not uncommon for it to get some general accidental abuse , kinked , stood on , get caught trapped ect

There are inboard tank caps that incorporate a one-way valve for venting. (not sure if that is compulsory in the USA for emission regs.....sure someone over there could enlighten us. (I've heard they don't get out of bed until the middle of the afternoon like our teenagers)

OK All, I've nearly got the quicksilver idea going and have ordered a hulk tank for development.

As an aftermarket part to make it easier to open vents in cold weather and prevent water intake from rain and spray how much would you pay for this part?

Plastic injection/vacuum injection is very expensive to get started with and I need to work out a reasonable cost and work out if its a loss maker from the start.

Thanks again.

It's actually getting the cap off the tank is my main moan. Considering the nature of the beast, it has to be the smoothest, most rounded filler cap I've ever encountered!

- The air vent works fine - well, it opens easily enough - too easily TBH, which is my complaint - it leaks!

I've already cured that with an ice cream tub. I'll post pics when I get home.......

Indeed it is. Depending on the perceived demand a "soft" tool or 3d printing may also be an option.

You also need to prototype it. - no point in spending money money to cut tools etc and find it doesn't work as planned!

I'd probably go to £15 or £20 for one that worked - much more and you are into new tank territory!
