Fuelling the boat on a trailer
Hi
Where I am there are very few waterside fuel options for petrol - precisely one, and they price accordingly.
Do you find that garages are OK with fuelling the boat while it is on a trailer?

Yes, I often take my RIB to the garage to fill up. If I'm going to have the boat in for several days, then I generally take 20lts down each time, then when the boat tank is nearly empty stick the RIB on the trailer and take to the local garage to fill up. The marinas in the Falmouth area are also way more than the garage pump prices.

Hi and welcome ,personally i launch at levington ,i am one junction from the dockspur a14 ,always down docksprur to 1st exit ,morrisons are well used to it and cheapest about ,back up dockspur left to seccond junction for levington ,you are more likely to get the old 5litre max can size than a problem with the boat on a trailer in my expierience, however i have found as they know i have a boat i seem to get away with filling a 20 litre can and filling at home .

At the next junction on M3 there is a Tesco with a filling station right at the junction, could save you some cash.

Fuelling the boat at local petrol station - Ive fitted a Barton Fuel whistle in the vent line so I can prevent myself from accidentally over filling the tank. Lots of local petrol stations automatically stop at 100 litres and force you to pay before resuming fuelling. Its a real pain. However way cheaper than fuel on the water.

It varies but quite often upto 1/3 or more above Service Stn (not Supermarket!) prices
I try not to Travel with too much Fuel in the Tank....especially on long haul.
With a full load (in my case 250+litres) things like wear and tear on Trailer/ Tyres reduced performance and longer braking times are all to be considered....along with the more obvious safty issues, and much prefer to top up close as possible to Jump off point.

Is an extra 175 kg really noticeable? I just brim it at the same petrol station each time as I know the pump doesn't cut out at 100l.

I have not fuelled a boat on a forecourt for many years, so thanks for the reassurance this thread has brought
For reference we are fortunate in Plymouth, Tesco price is currently about £1.20 and Mayflower are £1.37

Yarmouth harbours currently best part of £1.70 a litre, I’ve done 400 plus litres a day......🤣

That hurts. In 2006 I did some film work on the boat I had then and we put £1000 in in a day at £1.00 a litre from the Yarmouth pumps. Fortunately film company were paying the fuel bill. Was actually in Yarmouth today as it happens, but only drinking coffee, not boating.

It is worth checking the exit from a petrol station with trailer attached - some have some tight corners, at the end of the pump islands. Not normally a problem, but a bit of planning could save embarrassment.
If towing I normally fuel up as close the launch point as I can. Never had a problem with the boat tank, more issues with trying to fill 20l cans.

You tried man-handleing a 50 gallon Drum of Diesel/Fuel?
We do a fair bit of distance towing ...On a 600 mile+ Tow from our place to Arrisaig on the West Coast of Scotland last June (fully loaded with holiday and Boatiing/Camping gear/ passengers) and numerous other long tows to Scotland...North Wales-Cornwall ect For All the already reasons outlined...
For me the Cons far outweigh any Pros.
So Yep ...
And I use a Toyota Land Cruiser
