Fully Comp Insurance

The dreaded I word. Have made enquiries to upgrade my third party insurance to fully comp.

I dont have any NCD to use and Bishop Skinner came in at £210 plus change even with RYA discount. I know premiums vary wildly according to risk and cover but, I am a low (?) risk and the boat is only valued at 4k.

Anyone able or willing to compare my premium as high, low or about right. I'm not looking for the absolute cheapest or the quickest claims process, just a fair deal. South East preferable.

Your comments please.

Tim'mers.

Hi

I only have experience of three insurance quotes but they threw up interesting facts.

Quote 1 and 2 were for a £10000 boat and equipment and came in at around £210.

Quote 3 was for a £3000 boat and the best I could get was £174.

You would have thought that there would have been a bigger difference but I couldn't get the last quote much lower.

It would seem that there is a minimum price and when you try to save a few pennies by reducing the insured cost it doesn't make much difference at all.

I would have thought I could have got the 3rd quote down to a £100 but it seems I was way out.

Seems a bit steep biggles! I am paying £125 with Marden with a boat value of £2500.

I could get it for £156 with one company but their terms weren't as good.

Must admit I didn't try Mardon this time. Thats because my previous insurance was with them and when I wanted to leave my RIB in a Marina overnight last year they said they didn't cover any boat under 16' left on the water overnight. So I just didn't bother with them this time.

I tried half a dozen different insurers on the net some wanted quite a bit more. I ended up going for the one that was reasonably priced and seemed to want my custom. Some of them were slow at replying, the one I ended up going with was via a broker who seemed to know what they were talking about.

At the end of the day I won't know how good they are unless I need to claim.

Hopefully that won't happen.

Hi Swifty,

We have just insured ours (in January and also worth 4k) for £149. The terms seem good and the people were ace to deal with. If you'd like contact details, PM me and I'll send 'em over.

Update

Just got my insurance docs through today and had a nice little suprise.

The cost had been reduced to £137. This was because I hadn't claimed the full no claims bonus available.

Now that seems cheap. lets hope its good.
