Galvanising

I’ve had a trailer extension made. I’d really like to get it galvanised but it seems to be bulk loads only. Anyone know of a one off way to get something galvanised near Southampton please or have any experience of alternatives

Thanks gt

Cheapest way is to find a local engineering fabrication firm who get lots of galvanising done and ask them to put yours with their next load. Most galvanising companies work on a minimum weight charge which makes small quantities uneconomic. Usually a smaller company will add your items for a small charge, cash usually works best in my experience.

Ok sounds like a good idea. I don’t know how much minimum charge is but the lad who welded box section said it’s expensive.

As Beamishken said. Had a good few trailer bits galvanised over the years with our local steel fabricator . He sends off a set of stairs/gates etc and yours will go with them . Cash works best and you might have to wait a few weeks until he's got a shipment going.

Depends where you are, place we used to use was a minimum 250kg order but I have seen places as low as 60kg
Roughly £1.00 per kg ish is the cost.
I always find it a strange way to charge as a heavy beam will have a much smaller surface area than a lightweight fabrication but they charge by the weight of the item not the area being coated.
Just be sure the item is bare steel & not painted, a bit of surface rust isnt an issue it also needs holes drilled at the high & low points of any sealed sections & at low areas where liquid can pool. If in doubt the engineering place will advise but if it goes to the galvanising place without suitable drain holes its quite expensive for them to drill holes

These guys did my trailer. And at the time, they’d do small jobs, they’d just add you in with another job.

Failing that, maybe trestans and just powder coat? Not as good, but better than nothing.

Thank you. Lots of ideas. Gonna try the extension out first just in case it needs adjustment, then I’ll try out the suggestions.
