Getting back into a RIB

Hi I have just uploaded a video on You Tube of how to into a RIB without purchasing an expensive ladder.

Could do it much cheaper with a rope strop possibly weighted

Thanks for your comment.
I experimented with rope and a piece of metal pipe at the bottom. Problem was the rope didn't hold the foot rest in a constant orientation. With a strap the stirrup hangs down parallel to the boat,

When you put weight on the stirrup it turns your body into the boat and your foot out rather than a rope that allows your foot to go under the boat, which would be totally useless.

The metal pipe was hard on your foot where as a stirrup isn't, made for the purpose, and why and reinvent the wheel.

I did not like the fact that rope exerts a concentrated force on the tube material whereas strapping distributes the load over a wider area and I'm sure would have no detrimental effect.

One last point, the strapping is easier to adjust in length using the buckle which also allows for quick removal and installation.

I have a 1 tonne x 1m cargo sling clipped onto my jacket with a carabiner. It cost £3.50 from Toolstation.

I clip it on a d ring on the transom and use it to climb up over the back.

Works fine.

Just need to use your hands to put the sling over your foot.

I use it when anchoring off a beach and then swimming ashore.

As I use the boat solo, it would pretty useful in a MOB situation.

Now let's see her do it fully clothed with footwear on as most of us would be dressed for a UK day out on the boat not intending to finish up in the water.

Reason I fitted a ladder to my Dory was having seen just how difficult it was for a RN winchman to climb out of the water into it.
That's a young slim very fit man.
Been a long time since I fitted that description & my days of backward rolls doing a full leg raise crunch are long gone

I have a large cavitation plate which does allow stepping up if you know it's there but the ladder is much easier.
I suspect he would have used the plate had he known but with the helicopter in the immediate vicinity providing noise & downdraft any normal communication wasn't possible.

Whilst a length of rope can be used to improvise a step-up I do rather like SP's idea.

Clothing shouldn’t make a difference to the operation (depends how unsuitable your clothing is I guess........) are you wearing lead boots?
