Glue and more

Can someone advise me please? The rubbing strake on my Orca Hypalon tubes has come loose. I have a loose flap about 18" long at the stern.

What substance do I need to remove old glue from the strake and tubes and is there any special technique needed?

Likewise, what adhesive should I use and are there any secrets to applying it?

Is there anything that I simply MUST NOT USE which would ruin the tube?

Any help appreciated.

Jonathan

A heat gun, And a lot of sand paper. Sand off ALL the old glue with out burning through the fabric.

I would use weaver brand hypalon glue or zodiac brand.

The best way to remove glue from strake and tube is to use MEK failing which a light sanding will do. You can get your hypalon glue from Polymarine UK and they will have instructions on how to use the glue.

A definate no no for hypalon is anything silicone based.

Apparently there are some interesting issues when attaching a rub rail (non-Hypalon) to Hypalon. Polymarine and weaver did not work too well for me. Apparently there is something special for just that hybrid fusing.

Remove the old glue with 80 grit sandpaper then clean with 501 Bostik thinners...
Use Bostik glue to reattach but remember to prime both surfaces - For best results leave primed overnight.
Then re-glue both surfaces until touch dry and apply pressure again use a hand roller for best results....
Any glue left on the tube can be safely removed with the 501 thinners..

Apparently you can come back to the boat the next day and find 20+ feet of rubbing strake on the floor. Don't ask me how I know.

The strake is PVC but the Hypalon adhesive will do the job if you follow the advice from glue jug. The other thing is ensure it's a dry day - not just dry where you're doing the work, humidity in the atmosphere will ruin your day.
