Good all round fishing package

Guys,

Having not fished for about 18 years and when I did it was river and carp fishing. Keen to get into sea fishing and I would have thought mainly off the boat. I have no idea about the type of rod/reel I am guessing a 2 piece and I am sure the principles are the same but the technology has advanced somewhat. Appreciate this is an open question but can anyone point me in the direction of a reasonable priced rod and reel package. Any thoughts on this:? Are there any good discount stores online?

Shame you couldn't meet up with whisper and myself at the weekend. I've got some rods and reels for him to look at, enough for a couple of fishing outfits.

Hi Mate

Done a lot of sea fishing in the past and would recommend any of the larger abu multiplier reels say 7000 or 7500 and wouldn't go for 30lb class rod but 20lb would give you great sport and also good for light wrecking. I have an Abu Suveran rod with abu 7000 reel, fantastic package

I've got a cheap shakespeare rod, think it was £11 from the local tackle shop, it does the job fine.
My reel is a Shakespeare charter special which I've had for about 15 years and never given me any trouble.
If you want a simple reel google "Scarborough reels".

I looked at that package, apparently the rod is ok but the reel is not up to the usual Abu standards, let me know if you need to borrow some kit

After a lot of searching I ended up with old but good condition ABU 7000 reels which I am very happy with, with regards to rods I have an old 30lb shakespeare ugly stick, a 20-30lb penn and a 30lb ABU. They are all secondhand and have a few war wounds.

As woody said 30lb are a little stiff but the little Whispers love the using them with mackerel feathers as they don't bend when lifting them up and down.

I did have two cheap rod and reel combos from decathlon but the reels rusted out this weekend so I wouldn't buy cheap again.

The Abu 7000 reels are quite alot new so it's always worth searching around for a secondhand one

Hey Alex

Just been having a browse around, there's a 30lb Ugly Stik on Ebay at the moment £25 start price. Also I have just remembered another reel that is well worth a look, Daiwa 'SLOSH' are their nickname, they come in two sizes sl20sh or sl30sh, i would recommend the 30.

I used to use these on my uptide rods with no problems at all and half the price of the big Abu's
new ones on ebay at moment around the £80 mark

Really appreciate everyone's help on this. As it is pay day tomorrow I will be treating myself to a rod and reel set over the weekend.

Any advise on line/tackle/rigs (starter kits). Thinking of starting simple first with feathers for mackeral Rigs Would a 4oz weight be enough?

Any recommendations for the winning lure for Solent bass?

Found this site, saw a couple of names I recognized from RIBnet this looks useful:
Western Boat Marks
Central Boat Marks

Cheers

Thanks all for the help and advise in the end I went for:

Penn PowerStix Pro 4 piece (easy to transport and stash on the boat)
Penn 320Gt2

I will let you know how I get on this weekend!

Cheers
