Wotcher gettin' Maxi? Don't let 'em fob you off with RC fleeces, you can only wear one! I could field a team with R-B tees, so long as they were either midgets or monster lads....

For what it's worth, I actually agree with all of that. Selling 60 odd RIBs is good news for anybody however.

I agree entirely and I hope Ribcraft did get the deal. It is good for UK boat builders and the UK economy.
In fairness Ribcraft build a good Rib and have the advantage of having the factory close by should they need to perform some repairs/warranty/breakages or the like.
No doubt a fair number of the craft are going to be small craft with low horse power engines, similar to the ones Ribcraft produce for the Southampton Boat Show, but this is a market they understand and produce a very basic patrol boat, which is all that's required.
Redbay did not tender for the Olympics as it would upset our prodution line too much, and we do not produce some of the smaller boats that are required. but even if we had it would have been difficult to have dealt with the problems with not having the factory as close as Ribcraft. Maybe it would have been a different case had the sailing have been based in Belfast!! No doubt there would have been a few more sore heads thanks to the Black stuff!!

What about this then??
"Rayglass Protector boats have been purchased to patrol the 2012 Olympic Games in the UK
ZoomRayglass CEO Tony Hembrow says the 2012 organising committee has already secured significant numbers of the New Zealand-built rigid inflatable patrol craft. Police, security forces, and those responsible for patrolling the race courses at the 2012 Olympics are also considering choosing Protectors for their on-water roles.
The Protectors will be based at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and the adjoining commercial marina, in Dorset on England’s south coast, the sailing venue for the 2012 Games.
The company’s success in the UK follows the increasing popularity of the Protector range in the United States.
“Since our first shipment of Protectors arrived in the US, the interest has been incredible,” says Hembrow. “It has also been widespread and surprisingly diverse.
“We have sold boats for waterways’ policing, as superyacht tenders and even to work in shallow canal zones."
Protectors are now hard at work in many States, including Florida, California and Maine, used in a variety of commercial, military and pleasure boat applications.
Protector boats are manufactured in Rayglass’s new state-of-the-art production facility in Pakuranga and exported to countries all over the world."
Maybe the secret is in the italics (which are mine BTW)? The official Rayglass website, under News, does not mention it however???

In addition
Over 100 Ribs are needed for the Olympics. They are not just for the Sailing, they will be used at the rowing and triathelon events amongst other venues.

It's official now I guess, since the BMF have published a press release.
Ribcraft get a double whammy - not only did they get the contract to build 64 RIBs, but Solent RIB Charter got the charter contract with their fleet of Ribcrafts.
Well done both!

Very good for all involved. I wonder what plans are in place afterwards not to flood the market with Ribcrafts as this could send prices down for these boats, I know that others who withdrew had planned to sell all over the world so the UK was not affected.

Most of the Protectors that were offered after the last olympics were so bespoke, I'd question just how much mass market appeal these boats will have. You're average RC customer might not be to turned on by some of the 'limp wristed' efforts that these olympic WAFI guys will be spec'ing.

In case its of interest to anyone On a recent visit I was told that Ribcraft have been takeing orders for thier ex Olympic RIB's for sometime now.
In fact alot, if not most have been placed already!.. But they do still have some 585's and 7.8''s in different configurations which represent Considerable saveings on list price!
Give em a call and maybe Grab a Bargain
