That's something I know nothing about.
The idea sounds great, but I can also see the disadvantages, One to mull over.

You'll struggle to source a decent second-hand 2-stroke Yamaha 50hp, although anything is possible. Actually there was one for sale recently on Ebay (Skye), long-shaft and had been used in fresh-water, a snip at £2k!

If you do spot one - you might need to buy the bucket it's attached to. That's the reality of the second-hand market just now. Good luck.

Had a look at A1 National and they don't seem to carry much stock of used motors. I know Pete7 said not to go to Bill Higham but he does have a lot of stock and the prices don't seem that bad do they? Like the sounds of a bit of warranty too.

Two motors that I've seen are a Honda 45 4 stroke and a Mercury 50hp

That mercury is at least 25 years old-and the Honda is no spring chicken either.

He's asking at least double their worth for both of them too.

With a short hull weight is critical or you will upset the balance of the boat, hence our recommendations for 2 strokes. That Merc 50 hp is likely to be 1970s. The reason I said don't go to Bill is that he is very expensive and really only as a last resort.

The 3 cyl Yams and Mariner/Mercs will command a top price however this would do nicely. Okay its hand start but pull starting a 40 hp isn't difficult and means you can then get away with using a small motorcycle battery (saving space and weight) for electrics like a radio etc. For the price a late 90s engine will be much more reliable than a 30 year old Merc. Bembridge are members of Ribnet and built some very nice Shearwater cabin ribs. Having bought covers from them and visited several times I would be happy to recommend them.

Is 40 hp enough for a 4m rib? yes, I think that Merc 50 was rated at the powerhead also any wear will have reduced the power output, whilst the Mariner 40 will be at the prop,

The only reason I was thinking of a 4 stroke was for running costs. Paying out for petrol and the right 2 stroke oil just seems a bit much when the price between 4 strokes and 2 strokes doesn't seem that great.
But like you say, it's all down to the weight.

That 40 hp looks a good motor, only thing is is it's location. Will have to contact them and see how much P&P would be if they do it.

Don't get hung up with the hype about saving fuel with a 4 stroke. At tickover yes the honda might be 30% more efficient as there adverts says, but that is 30% of say a gallon an hour, hardly worth getting excited about. At speed however the difference is likely to be much smaller. In the 130 to 150 range we have seen old 2 strokes use less than hondas 4 strokes.

Long time since I used a Mariner 40 but would have thought 15 - 20 L per hour constantly flat out and obviously less for cruising or water skiing etc.

Yep - a 40 or 50 2-stroke on a SR4 will give you a very good day out on 2 x 25l cans of fuel (+ 1l of oil) Total cost £60

If you insist on going 4-stroke, to give you some guidance on value, this 1999 Soozookitrood 50 sold a couple of days ago for £1550

Yeah I got outbid on that motor by 25 quid!
Right looks like two stroke it is. But just before I drop the dead donkey is this no good? Claims to be the lightest 4 stroke plus it's new!

With the RRP close to £5k (clicky) I would say it's a little tooo good to be true.

Absolute bargain if it's genuine but tread carefully, it could be a scam

Normally you don't pay until you get an invoice? So if that is the case then it doesn't sound too bad. What d'ya think gents?

Downhilldai, budget is what it needs to be really (with in reason). Want the best motor I can get.
