Government online Petition: Coastguards
Hi all,
Back in May the Government announced a U turn on plans to close upto 8 Coastguard stations.
It seems that on 11th July when everyone was getting ready for the summer Hols and Parliament was about to close down it was anounced that the closures of these 8 stations is to go ahead after all
Please sign the online line petition and complain to your local MP in the strongest terms if you think the government is wrong.
Best wishes
Jake

From Acorns grow Oak trees..... you never know. If enough people throw their voice behind this they'll back down as they dont want to lose their seat on the gravy train.
Best wishes

Done. I wonder if it would work winding the clock back a few hundred years when looking after the safety of shipping was semi-privately run, funded by the ships paying "light dues" ??

Do large vessels not still pay light dues?
Can anyone point me to the Details of the decisions which you think were taken and then reversed?

I'm not sure at what size of vessel becomes liable for light dues are paid, but they are still paid. I'm not sure the coastguard see any of it though.

I didn't think so but you could well be right. I thought Trinity House was funded by the government but maybe not. Perhaps it would make sense for MRCC's etc to come under their control? They already have a certain amount of infrastructure which could support CG operations. They could put ETV's to use alongside their own vessels etc.

HM Coastguard Proposals for Modernisation Consultation 2011
It's been noticed recently that the Anglian Princess has been repainted black over her CG colours. Some claim that this is in preparation for her to be sold back into the salvage/rig support industry

Yes, given its mostly small boat owners getting vocal about it, perhaps suggesting a tax to keep ch stations open might be unwelcome ?

I guess bringing back ship's radio license fees wouldn't raise anything like the cash required to keep the CG stations going?

Wiil follow the link.......
I once said somewhat tongue in cheek in the presence of a number of coastguard officers " Well you never know, maybe the RNLI will take you over" !!!
The response was " don't you jest, that might not be far from the truth" !!!!!
Then dodged a number of heavy objects that came flying my way
Then the whole UK SAR organisation would be provided by charities !!!!
