Hand Held search lights
Found this at compass24.com, it looks exactly the same as the Aqua Signal Bremen hand lamp but it is half the price. Does anyone know if it’s any good? They say it meets MCA does that mean it is SOLAS approved? Des

I think is not SOLAS approved if it does not say so.
SOLAS (Save Of Life At Sea) is an international Organisation funded by shipowners Worldwide, MSA (MArine Safety Agency) is a UK National Oragnisation funded by the UK Government. Two different Oragnisations with own rules and regs many of which are the same
But I did not see to say MSA approved
Waterproof and buoyant. Rubber-covered 12 volt, 50 watt searchlight with convenient pistol grip, on / off signalling button, 70 cms spiral cord extendable to approx. 270 cms with a cigarette lighter plug. Throws a beam up to 300 metres. Dia.: 12 cms.

Had an Aquasignal in my old Ribcraft 4.8. Brilliant (sorry!) bit of kit. Best to have a proper water-proof socket rather than a ciggy lighter thingy.

Actually I thought SOLAS was a convention for safety of life at sea that lays down standards for allsorts of ship related things which are then enabled in law by the individual countries. The international body I think you are referring to is the International Maritime Organisation or IMO. UN body but based in London.

Looks identical to the Aquasignal to me. Forget the cigarette lighter socket and get a waterproof plug and socket. Well worth the extra £'s.

Bought one and although it looked the part it was, in reality, a poor copy . It was not water proof and I doubt that the switch will last. Buy cheap by twice (now who said that).
So I’ve sent it back and will buy the real McCoy. Does anyone know were I can get a 24V aqua signal lamp for less than £70?

I'm one for having all the.....
.........kit, gadgets, beer coolers, safety eqipment - you name it and I've got it - but come on, most of you guys cruise around in open ribs with just about two or if you're lucky three small dry lockers on the whole boat, so, where the hell do you keep all this stuff whilst maintining a clean and safe deck. Of course, having (Had/getting another) Med' style RIB means I don't have any such worries.

On my boat I haven’t got a locker, I have a cellar and the space between the wine rack and the central heating boiler would be just large enough for your med style rib.
Joking apart I agree that you can have too much equipment and I try to keep things to a minimum so the only beer on board is in my stomach and definitely no gadgets. But I do use the boat at night (last night was lovely)and coming up the Beaulieu River (which is virtually un-light) can be interesting. I also think a good light is number 3 after flares and a radio.
