Gavin ol' chap, ahem...why would Ark Royal be going to Dublin?

I know from personal experience that there are anomalies in the relationship between the Irish and the British military.

I felt quite emotional about that brave Irish lad recently killed in Basra while serving with that famous British Regiment of Foot, The Irish Guards. They gave him a funeral with full Brit military honours in your country.

Also, in my day, all the best Army padres were former Irish rugger internationals. Indeed, John Youens, the former British Army Chaplain General was capped on a number of occasions for Eire.

But why on earth would Ark Royal be invited by the Irish to Dublin? Have I missed something?

I am sure the Royal Navy will be a little surprised, but very pleased to find out they have some battleships.

We used to think of them more as "War Canoes"
