Hosepipe Ban and Boat Users
Heard on the news this evening that the water companies are introducing a hosepipe ban to quite a few areas.
How will that affect boat users who need to wash their boats off and flush their engines after use?
Not going to very easy using a bucket and sponge 
What are your views? Anyone know if boat users would be exempt?

Will be interesting to see whether those of us on water meters are exempt. We are generally very careful with our water usage (multiple rain-water butts, dual flush loos, A+++ ultra low water consumption washing machine, etc) so the few gallons I use to flush and wash the RIB after usage is hardly an extravagance, and I pay for what I use anyway.

hmm, think id argue that flushing at least was a necessity - they are more bothered about people leaving sprinklers on just to keep their lawns green.

from Which mag July 2006, it listed " you are typically barred from: watering with a hosepipe/sprinkler/irrigation system; washing cars, caravans and trailers with a hosepipe " ............ so are boats & muffs included...? think it would be yes.....
1 hour with a garden sprinkler = upto 1000 lts ( Which mag )

I started to think about this last night, but then realised Dorset seems to be OK ! But then I thought would it really make a differance if I used a big bucket and not a hose ?
I wash the boat down with a bucket & sponge anyway .....
To be fait most real hose users have a 'gun' on the end anyway nowadays to stop the water when its not needed---its just the pesky gardeners that waste it all ( and of course the water companies themselves let a lot leak away  ) .
My ex used to insist on watering everything in sight after 2 days of no rain ....with the meter spinning away happily for hours ......what a waste of water & money.....

I remember the dinghy club I was with back in 2006 was classed as a business, so wasn't covered by the ban ....or somethng like that.

not really - unless you were using your boat for emergency rescue - if you can't maintains it you should not use it...
BUT , nothing stopping you keeping a big bin full of water that you use over the season for flushing...
Most boats that are moored only get flushed once a year....

Last time we had a ban I contacted my water provider & got permission to use the hose to flush my engine!

I've emailed south east water having thought about this very issue today. Ill post the reply when and if it comes back. Not worried about boat as bucket and sponge will do but flushing engine is more of a concern.
