5750 rpm is the top rpm on the brand new opti. With the right prop you must do atleast 52 knots

It will be! Finally got it all sorted for last weekend, and had a sensor failure, so it only went 50mph - and believe me that feels positively pedestrian at that speed!

Figured this is as good a time as any to stop lurking and join the debate with a first post.

I have just taken delivery of my new 9m Cobra with 2 Suzi 300s on the back. So far I have 1.5 hours on each engine so it will be a few hours before we can see what she can really achieve. Should be enough to warm the drysuit though!

While she has not been formally named yet, what do members think of "Carbon Footprint"? Am I asking to have my tubes slashed??

Welcome.

Depends on how many tree huggers live near you. I can only achieve a pitiful (??) 36.5 knts with my 90.

Have lots of fun and give me a shout if you do a run to the Scillies.

Great idea!!!

Sounds like a nice outfit you have - remember when running in your engines a bit of caution doesn't go amiss - running in for 2x as long as the makers say never hurt anyone and may just make you engines last even longer!!!

2 Schools of thought on this one Cods, I've had many an experienced fitter, and I mean very knowledgeable men, perhaps even more than you

say ... open it up early and it will be a good motor all its days. If not you'll soon know. I , personally am in two minds, heart body and soul suggests follow the manual, but then they would say that, to avoid early warranty claims ! On the other hand, hammering a new motor never seemed a good idea

Well I have been known to run an engine for quite a while - 220,000 miles is my record so far and the engine was still fine!!! I have never blown an engine yet(touch wood) - I always run them in for a bit longer than they say. I never rev too hard until up to temp and regular oil changes - I tend to rev to the red line all the time but never on a cold engine.

Yes yes this is all about car engines but most outboards are the same - especially the 4 strokes.

i used to race quads and built all my own engines, never blown oe so to speak but they was built ever 20 hrs or so,
check this link out i beleive in it,

but for warranty issues and the fact the dealers laptop can gain all information from your out board your waranty will be void on an out board

Interesting reading, everybody has the urge to open up the throttle a bit on a new toy and lets face it lots of people do even if its just momentarily, but to think that it might actually be good for the engine certainly chucks a spanner in the works

Sorry but I think it's a load of crap for any engine you want to last a long time.

Dragsters use this method of running in - they start up from cold and hammer it almost straight away. Cold engines have much higher compression as the oil is so thick. The difference is the engines only run for a few seconds and then are rebuilt.

There aren't many engines around that rival glow motors for power to weight etc - they STILL advise proper running in.

The best example is to look at piston engine aircraft operating procedures - your life literally depends on your engine and you would never even think of taking off until oil pressure and cylinder head temp were up to spec.

You can damage an engine by being too gentle with it. You can get carbon deposits building up etc. This tends to be a problem with older people driving modern cars who never go over 3,000rpm. As long as an engine is warm and run in it's fine to go the rev limit in every gear!!!

Besides which it's not just piston rings you need to think of - there are lots of other moving parts - gears for example need to bed in properly and not be subjected to too high a load at first. And this applies to ANY gear wheel.............
