I went out on a 4.3m Humber and the swell was about 4-5meters. great fun but scary though

A frame mounted cam or not .. the amounts of sea:sky , sea:sky lets us know what a bounce that was, least of all looking at the second boat

Those are typical conditions for the Bristol Channel - bloody place!!!

Great video - the more I watch stuff like this the more I realise that twin engines are not a good idea unless you have 12 passengers sitting up front to balance them out!!!

Most RIBs seem too stern heavy as it is. Nice to see the driver's console right forward to help with balance - must make for a rough ride though!!!

This was my first Rib and I bought it off Osprey_Viper on here, used to be called Keymar, I renamed it Danny Boy. It was superb and in great nick, I did loads of stuff to it including the replacement of the Johnson 90hp with an E-tec 115hp.

there was a little too much weight in the back due to the aformentioned aux engine and fuel however it was a superb rib that handled anything you could throw at it and without the extra weight it was much less flightyover the waves.

I sold it to a pair of teachers up norf who were into diving. Would like to think its still getting plenty of use in the rough stuff.

Its great fun though! went out from ilfracombe last summer and the waves were breaking up the harbour slip after rolling along the harbour wall,

the missus decided she didnt like boats and demanded to be put ashore with the sprog, i dropped them off and went back out for a play in the waves, when in the troughs 500 yards out you couldnt see land

the wavelength is a lot longer than the solent short chop though, but even so managed to get get the boat completley airborne at probably 12 knots. Hilarious fun but very tiring. even the jetskiers had given up, there wasnt even a breath of wind

I guess the waves are created hundereds of miles off in the atlantic and get bigger as the get into shallow water and funnel up the channel?

That's exactly what happens. If you look at the map you will see the waves are funnelled between Ireland and Cornwall and then hit us.
The Lougher/Burry estuary is even worse!!!

I agree though in some ways I would prefer 30' Atlantic rollers than the horrible solent chop!!!

I have found the jetskiers always give up before I do - try to get them to play but they will have none of it!!!

it was horrible coming back in to ilfracombe though i was taking in water over the stern and stuffing at the same time while the throttle was as far forward as it would go!!! the wavelength must have been 5.4m thank god for teleflump trunks! dread to think what would have happened in my old microplus 502

The North Atlantic swell provides Cornwall with its £65m a year surfing industry. Not too much 'funnelling' on this side though.

We were one of the relatively few out on the Solent last week as well - I think it was a force 4 gusting 5? Whilst it was choppy I think it was probably "perfect" ribbing conditions, as if it's too smooth you spend all your time looking for wake.
However - we went out again this afternoon (Sunday) - from the Hamble out of Southampton water and up towards Yarmouth, back to Cowes, down towards Porstmouh and back to the Hamble.
It was as SW force 7 gusting 8 (according to the guys at Hamble Point marina) and the only other ribs we saw out all afternoon were the ones from SeaStart!
Whilst last week was great, this afternoon was hard going - fun, but by the time we got back to the Hamble we were drenched and exhausted!
Did you venture out this weekend so you can compare it to last week?

No.. Was working this weekend so didn't get a chance to go out

As you say, last week was probably good "fun" conditions, our only issue is that we are new to ribbing, so still finding our feet. The rib is brand new, and quite a different beast to our Jetskis.

Can't wait to get out next weekend hopefully, and get some more experience.
