Those finishes are a work of art.
Top guy, gave me great advice on paint types and spraying a couple of years ago. Thanks again Nugent [emoji1303]

Question I have a 32-22 year old Mercury 3.3 hp for it's age it's not in bad Nick paint wise but some areas are corroded blowing the paint off I intended just to can spray it to tidy it up but worried the corrosion in the aliminium will blow the paint off again is there a neutraliser I can paint on prior to the top coat.
Cheers

just clean the affected area with 80 then 180 dry then acid etch prime (just a couple of light coats ) then a couple of coats of primer wet flat with p800 then black satin / gloss whatever matches best you can get it all in aerosol the acid etch will help the primer adhere to the metal

A zinc chromate primer works well on outboards.

Quick Question.
Do you have a preference on 2pack paint to work with the primer?
Is International Perfection worth the extra ££ over cheaper alternatives?

I asked the International chap at the boat show whether going down the two pack route was better for painting my transom. His recommendation was that you use Yacht Primer and Toplac. If it was underwater for weeks at a time, it might start to peel but in the type of use I was putting it to - drystack / trailer, he didn't think it was worth the cost.

Superb finishes, really impressive work -I’d almost be afraid to use a hull with a shine like that!
Painting on the trailer is impressive, how do you secure the boat safely from toppling sideways when you have it up on the keel?

Sorry been busy dot com
Any bare Ali as stated above ,
80 grit corrosion away ,
180 smooth it out
Zinc chromate best all etch on planet,
2k high build primer this will lock it all in,
Any too coat, 2k aerosols are available. Make sure you press button on bottom tho

Hull respray procedure
I prefer the HMG polykote 4+1 on previously painted hulls, polykote MU primer on grp ,MU is thicker and sands easier ,
This with Acrythane A211 or Dearer option Acrythane G4 on top is mega durable

It's still on rear rollers whilst I hit the front , then lift the rear and sit it on the front ones ,it's well strapped down to trailer also,

Hi Nugent -
any chance you've got a link to the Green King filler? Whenever I search for it I end up on the pub web sites!
Thanks

I’ll bet it is! I’ve used a jack and lots of bits of planks. Slow and iffy! So no magic to avoid having to do the two ends separately. I saw someone anti fouling a work RIB on a barge. Slung it with the HIAB, easypeasy! Personally there’s no way I’d have worked under hydraulics which is why I’m sure you don’t sling under the farm machinery while painting, tempting though it might be!
Btw, thanks for all the detail on hull painting, even though I don’t plan on trying it, it’s top quality info that would work equally well on a less ambitious project like an engine cowling.

@nugent How long do you leave it before dropping the front down and doing the rear?
I am looking to paint on the trailer at the moment, but not sure how to do it and make sure I don't ruin the new paint on the front when I lift the back.
The alternative is to borrow the neighbours Manitou and spin it over onto some bales as the console is not currently in, but I think one advantage of on the trailer is slightly less falling dust/midges than if it was upside down as I am painting outside.
