Hypalon glue while outdoors?

Is there any reason I cannot apply glue while the boat is outside? (do not have shed big enough for it)

As long as it is dry it should be ok. I glued 2 larger patches on top of the rear of mine with no problems. It was windy but dry.

Yeah all is dry.

Problem is im finding it hard to find hypalon 2 part glue, in small quantities. Im likely selling my old RIB so dont want a 500ml pot of the stuff. But the single agent glue, I do not think is meant for rub strakes, although it is not structural.

Not sure what I should use to clean away the old glue either, I have nail polish type stuff and sand paper :-). Not sure if that is ok on hypalon.

If you intend to do a pukka job:
  1. Use the 2 part glue
  2. Outside is fine, but humidity MUST be low - this is vital as water vapour will negatively affect the bonding strength
  3. Use an abrasive to remove the old glue - a flapwheel on a powertool seems to be the favourite method
  4. Degrease
  5. Prepare both bond surfaces with adhesive
  6. Apply 2 layers before the final glueing layer - allow them to tack off between applications
  7. After final layer tacks, join and apply rolled pressure to the bonded area.
  8. 24 hours to full structural strength - so be gentle

Outside isn't great with the current temperatures. Equally, plenty of people under take repairs outside.

Nail varnish remover type stuff isn't what you want for hypalon repairs though - it sounds like you've probably got acetone which is better for PVC.

RIBstore sell smaller tins of hypalon glue (125ml and 250ml) plus also the solvent you need too.

If you're not sure on the repair process, check out the how to guides (https://www.ribstore.co.uk/pages/advice-information) which can be rather useful - they're there for everyone to use regardless of whether you purchase from us or not.

Hope some of this info helps.

...doh! I've clearly not been on RIBnet forum enough recently to realise people's locations are visible. Either than or I chose to ignore the fact it's probably much nicer weather than the rather grim wet/coldness here!

In which case, my advice is to keep the boat in the shade whilst you do the repair and afterwards too!

None the less you at least spared the time to try and help out :-)

Its actually quite hard to get glue where I am at.

I would prefer the polymarine stuff, but it all contains the same chemical I guess.

This 2 pot set looks ok for $50 for 100ml Bostik 2405 + RFE Desmodur.

You can also get a single pot, which I believe, but not sure, is both premixed, but stated not suitable for anything structural.

I just want to pin a rub strake down properly again, nothing major.

Bostik 2405+ Desmodur will work fine. Just clean up excess glue after application as they turn purple when cured.

IS there a cheap product I can use for cleaning off old glue along with some 60 grit paper? As mentioned above acetone/nail polish is better suited to PVC. But I do not want to pay too much.

What type of anchor tie off figure 8 tie down would be best to buy and glue to the boat? I want to make the anchor end more functional, currently there is nothing to tie the anchor too.

The only company I'm aware of in Australia is RIBworx, but they couldn't be much further from you (they're in Victoria).

Regarding bow pieces, bow rollers like on Ribeyes are great, but they're generally designed for the tube shape/size of the specific boat unfortunately. There are cleat type piece available which are on a flexible base making them more suited for universal fitting. The other option of course is fitting a cleat on the the deck and installing a bow fairlead on the tubes for protection.

Good luck finding glue - and sorting the cleat too!
