So it's worth going to the CI for two reasons then ...

1. Cheap fuel
2. Because they are there!

A few years ago, I spent an unintended extra week iin St Peter Port, having damaged my propellers in the MARINA! They had to get new ones from Watford and it was over a bank holiday. But what a great week - Guernsey is a terrific place!

I see my new Scorpion as more than up to the challenge and what a great way to spend a weekend - going to the CI and back with the bonus of cheap fuel!

Petrol would be 29p per litre from that petrol station without tax - YES the oil price is high but I wouldn't mind paying that - would you????

So in essence, we should start an import and export company. Exporting milk to Jersey and importing petrol on the return trip. Anyone got a large tank without baffles, don't want 1000kgs of butter on arrival, Where is our Eupa he should be up for this sort of thing.

Indeed - our thirst for fuel helps this poor country and we should be thanked. How could local government on the IW afford a 'fashion adviser' without our kindly donations.
I am sure Southampton council is eternally grateful for this as it will greatly improve their traffic light purchase programme (I believe they intend to place lights at 50 yard intervals on all main roads).
And don't forget the legal aid to those we may not desire here and the interpriters required in all hospitals now... someone has to pay, may as well be those who have worked hard to enjoy a hobby...

A few months ago I was talking to a boat builder down at Lymington about the red diesel tax issues. He told me that he wasn't that bothered. He said that during the fuel crisis many decades ago some enterprising person started selling fuel from a floating station located just off British waters, and therefore without the tax. He thinks this will happen again.

I must confess that I don't understand the legalities of this, or how far out to sea it would have to be moored, but it sounds like a very good idea. Perhaps soaring petrol prices could see this happen sooner rather than later?

Was thinking it would not be hard to arrange the same. As long as you are 12 miles offshore there should be no problem.

Good idea in theory. We have a fuel barge moored in Falmouth harbour. It has massive rubber fenders along each side, but with a bit of sea running in a decent size hard boat it's bloody tricky getting along side. One 12m off in the winter would be nightmareish!! :-/

the floating tax-free ship - just outside territorial waters- unfortunately was tried some 10 years ago- and got raided by C&E. Anybody remember radio caroline?? doesnt matter if its anchored out of all jurisdiction ---"THEY" alawys find some way of closing it down... 'danger to shipping' ect ect.

The point is that if they are selling red diesel for boats .. then petrol should also be de- taxed and as codders said this would come down to some 30 p a liter

My grandmother (who is from Guernsey) was telling me today that the authorities don't like you "importing" petrol from Guernsey. Appranlty offically you are not allowed to take a fuel car tank back.....

Can anyone shed any light on this; will I get "busted" if I fill the car (and 10 or so 5litre cans) up with cheap petrol??

I think that the ferry companies get very upset about cans. Never seen anybody being asked to drain their car's fuel tank on the quayside though!
