Planning to buy a 5+m rib for family sports. What size engine would be needed to accommodate 5 adults on rib plus pulling a ski er?

RIBase
Welcome to the forum.

That's fairly specific, assuming there's always going to 5 people on board. As it's watersports, then a less utilitarian deck layout will be the way to go. That means ample seating for 5, storage onboard and enough grunt to haul a waterskier from a standing start. You can change props for better hole shot, but hp wins every time.

Part of the reason I mention this, is 5 people on board, fuel and kit is heavy, so I'd personally be looking for 140hp minimum.

Ribeye A600 is rated for 150hp. Again budget will determine a lot. Even a used A600 commands a hefty premium and most will be paired with 115hp engines.

A 5m with an 80/90 will be ok for cruising with 5 folks but likely to be poor for watersports with 5 aboard if you want to stick to 5m then best idea is chuck out the passengers onto the beach while your skiing or whatever. As boats get bigger to carry more hp & passengers they become less nimble and fuel costs increase dramatically. Personally i think 4.5-5.5m is a good size for watersports but probably 5+ to suit your 5 passengers and if you want to ski or wakeboard with all passengers aboard then probably bigger again.

Driver & observer.

Any more and there's someone standing on the rope, blocking your view, getting in your way when you're trying to deal with the rope, distracting you, getting in the skier's way when they're trying to get back into the boat...etc. Not to mention the detrimental effect on the boat's performance..
