i experinced and engine failure and rowed to a secluded beach on anglesey. have to wait for a higher tide to refloat. they refuse to cover any loss unless the rib is lcoked in a compund/marina despite the circumstances ! vewry poor customer service, hard to get through and speak to the appropriate people etc.

How and what damage was done to the boat? Did you have to abandon it or just wait for the next tide?

What do you expect them to cover exactly? It isn't clear from your post if anything was damaged or if you were calling them asking to pay to refloat it?

you could have read the T&C's for that. I'm sure you can buy insurance to cover just about anything, it just depends how much you are willing to spend.
I'm sure others with Towergate insurance with breath a sigh of relief having read the thread.

Id expect abandoning ship because of danger to be covered however leaving unattended on a beach because it broke down is a different matter.
Id imagine in a real situation that lead to a loss the claim would be for having abandoned due to drifting into danger.
Asking a hyperthetical question like that of an insurance company is likely to result in a not covered comment as they wouldnt want you to just walk away and think its ok its insured they would expect you to take all reasonable steps to either recover the boat or ensure it is secure

I agree it's hard to get an insurance company to commit to a "what if" query. Also I'd not be surprised that they'd be reluctant to confirm cover for an "abandonment" on a beach where the cause was engine failure. Probably different if the beaching was part of an insured incident as beamishaken says.

Always read my policy details in minute detail so I know where the covered/not covered line is drawn and assess the risks/potential loss if that line needs to be crossed.

The potential consequences of an engine failure could be far more significant than any payment or non-payment by your insurance company. It's a bit like arguing the merits of warranty on your engine when you're bobbing around dead in the water sixty miles off shore.

Why did your engine fail?
What steps can you take to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Is this a "what if" or did you actually do this?

- Rowed to shore, beached and abandoned?

Seems extreme - would the RNLI not assist - usually they'll give a tow in to somewhere reasonably safe? There are ways of recovering beached boats too - costs a few quid but doable. Did you ask the insurance company about helping recover the boat?

FYI, I'm entirely unsurprised by the position adopted by the insurance company.

I'm interested in knowing which "secluded beach" on Anglesey? Most have tourists on them now.
