Insurance (yet again)
Hi guys,
Whilst at uni I have been informed that my boat insurance has expired, its covered under the household anyway, so I dont need to insure it until I next use it (probably christmas).
I was insured with Marden, based on a value of £2.5k. First year i payed £155, last year was £125, now its increased to £160ish.
I just tried the craftinsure online quote system, which is pants, doesn't ask for manufacturer! Bases the whole thing on boat value. Secondly, in the terms it state the helm has to be 20years of age or over -useless for me then. And their quote is £210
Who are other people using and how much are they paying?
Cheers,
Alex

I use Porthcawl Insurance Consultants; they always seem to be very competitive. They don't seem to care about age either.
They also came up with one of the cheapest quotes for my new boat - which interestingly is only about £20 more than I pay at the moment for my 4.7m and includes use for RYA training.

Just put my RIB in the water and desperately wanted to make sure I was covered. Had several earlier quotes all over £300 for an 4m Avon Searider with a 30 HP Honda (no names no pack drill!) Emailed PORTHCAWL spoke with the boss Mr Knipe, really nice guy! They only do Martine Insurance!!!!
£146 fully comp WELL IMPRESSED!
Give them a ring or track down the website under PORTHCAWL IINSURANCE Sorry can't find the link but Google will
Take care out there.........

I'm currently insure with Craftinsure which costs me £180/year based on a value of 7k. Porthcawl Insurance is also good, the owner used to race Zapcats.

Can only add to the general consensus - Porthcawl are the only people worth dealing with.

Porthcawl do a very competitive quote and usually offer agreed valuation which is good. I think their policies are underwritten by Norwich Union, but if I remember correctly, this is a very different policy from what Norwich Union Direct offer.
We use Colin Curtis Marine - they are very good at customising the policy to your requirements, particularly for European use. http://www.curtismarine.co.uk I'm guessing that they will probably be a little more expensive than PIC for a UK only policy.
Also worth giving Euromarine a call http://www.euromarine-ltd.com/

I use porthcrawl as well - my quote was £371 but thats with a total boat value of 23k including trailer, electronics, etc and no layup period - also it includes waterski, wakeboard and towing of inflatable toys which is excluded from most policies.

Porthcawl quoted me £139 including ski and towing of toys and that was at my nottingham (uni) address
Seems like a good deal, only thing is im now considering an upgrade, set my student loan aside for a 5.4 Searider.
Regards
Alex

went with porthcawl today and got a quote for 323 for waterskiing etc and 25k value which seems fine , the others mentioned in this thread came nowhere near and one of them was a bit odd to say the least, well the woman was so gave up on her. so porthcawl got the thumbs up from me

Have always been with Bishop Skinner. More expensive than the most but they seem to offer the best in terms of cover. My renewal has just come up and I have shopped around for a few quotes. The majority have been cheeper but always involve some compromise in cover. I am gonna ring Bishop Skinner and see if they will match the premium but remain with the same level of cover. RYA/RNLI membership does give you a discount too.

Norwich Union Direct don't offer RIB Insurance as all Norwich Union's boat insurance is dealt with through selected intermediaries.
Noble Marine also offer a policy underwitten by Norwich Union, but the wording is different to the policy offered by Porthcawl.

have you considered doing an all in one package for an RYA Skool, business and boat (s) etc.
Also does any facility exist for a second boat to be added for a school with a reduction in insurance cost for the second boat

Or..
We are NOT able to provide RIB Insurance for
Boats based in Southern Ireland
Racing risks
Vessels based outside Europe
Charter/commercial risks
Skippered Charter
Towing toys, inflatables, wakeboards and the like
Personal Watercraft / Jetskis / Jetbikes
Personally, thats one of the more important things listed on my insurance..
ps.. Is "the like" an insurance company cop out so they don't have to pay sod all?

RIB Insurance
The exact wording relating to towing, is in respect of third party liability and states:
"We will not pay for any liability to or incurred by any person engaged in a sport or activity, other than water-skiing, while being towed by the Vessel or preparing to be towed or after being towed until safely onboard or ashore."
