Might be in the market for about 15 feet of this stuff soon - anyone found a cheaper supply in the UK or and alternative that works?

Treköllan
If you want a really good keel protection, buy Treköllan. See http://www.trekollan.se/beach_bumper_uk.htm
We have used Treköllans in our RIBs without problems. Totally fluent hull and absolute reliability. I know couple of craft in very serious use that have Treköllans fitted and they have worked with high success. On the other hand, price is quite high.

Funnily enough, NO. I don't actually see the point of it!
As it only protects the keel line, I can't see what use it has in protecting the hull should you beach for instance.

This is what I have paid including local taxes!
As for guarantee I have bought this from the maker them selves so if it goes wrong then I do not go through an agent I go strait back to them!

Well looking at the damage to my keel it will work, as it will be covering all the affected area! So I think it will be just the job!

What made you go for a 12ft length when the Keelguard website recommends a 6ft length for your size boat?

Well John I felt that the 6’ that they recommend would not give the keel the protection that I wanted, also I want to take it right up to the tubes at the bow or if not up to the U bolt! So 6’ would not have gone very fare.
Regards
Nick

Sorry Nick, I think you may have misunderstood me.
Local taxes would probably be a US sales tax, you don't have to pay this as it's an export. Duty is payable when it arrives into this country, probably be around 2.5% if it doesn't fall into the new criteria of extra duty as discussed in another thread. If it does then it will be an additional 6 or 7% on top of that, you will then have to pay Vat at 17.5% on purchase price, shipping and duty, and if it's being brought over by UPS or similar you will also have a "paperwork charge" of maybe £10.00 which is also VAT'able.
You may be lucky and avoid all of this, but it's unlikely. I ship goods on a monthly basis from the States and I hardly get away with it ever!!!
If you have a warranty issue, say for instance it falls off, then when they send you a replacement, you go through the same thing again!!!
Customs & Excise tend to not believe you when you say it's a free replacement.
I wish you well though, it pi**es me off just as much with the ridiculous prices charged over here!!!!!

I agree with Dirk on the before mentioned, but there is a small government tax I think. Anyhow can't foreign government taxes from imports be reclaimed when you’re charged the VAT and import taxes on this side?
With regard warranty issues, if you had a problem wouldn't you contact the UK office of Keelguard! It shouldn't be like warranty issues you get with electronic....Should it?

Well I can only tell you what has happened to me which is I paid local taxes & had no problems the package even had the customs declaration & dispatch note CP 72
Which has the value stated on it!
I also last year bought a GPS from the US & again had no problem, but one day no doubt I will get court out!

interesting stuff
Found a USA website (West Marine) that has the keelguard listed.
http://www.westmarine.com/
Its supposedly one of the largest chandlers in the world and ships internationaly.
Interesting just to browse and check out pricing!
Definately a "toy store " for big kids so lock your credit card up!
cheers Dal

I'd be tempted to use a bit of cardboard !
Is that £21 per foot of rubbing strake or carboard?
As for the Keelgaurd if I get it from the US it should cost about $23 per foot including shipping!

www.westmarine.com
Incredibly vast selection. Their print catalog is 600+ pages. Sort of the Wal-Mart of marine goods in terms of selection. I consider them to be horrendously overpriced on most items, except for sale items. Though they did just open a local store, I try to shop the local chandlery instead.
For you in the UK, if you don't have another source, they may be the only way. They ship worldwide.

Chaps, I wonder whether this bit of small print is important for trailer sailers?
"Note: If Your trailer is designed such that the entire weight of the boat rests on rollers or a support beam along the keel, we do not recommend installing the KeelGuard. If the rollers can be lowered or the side bunks raised to clear the rollers, the KeelGuard adhesive bond will not be compromised. May not be suitable for some aluminum boats with reinforced rib design. Please contact MegaWare KeelGuard for your particular application."
