Kingston upon Hull

For such a small city Hull has a lot of rib builders.

Humber
Tornado
Xs Ribs
North Craft

I did not know this until visiting some family, does any where else in the uk have so many builders per sq mile?

Find it interesting and surprising! So who are the best?

The famous sailing ship HMS Bounty of the mutiny was also built in Hull at a price of £1950 as a coal ship & sold to the Royal Navy for Captain Bligh's infamous Pacific expedition for £2400
Think you would be hard pressed today even buying a rib at that price lol,

There also used to be another rib builder in Hull in the late 1970s N.S.M (North Sea marine ) .

Can't resist my favourite local quote on completion of the Humber Bridge - which is an amazing piece of engineering- from a local... " They've spent £120million quid connecting nowt with nowt and calling it Humberside".

Being serious though, I was very glad when the areas N&S of the Humber reverted to being East Yorkshire & North Linconshire. Whoever though that two counties & communities split by one of the largest estuaries in the country would ever gel into one community?

Picked my new rib up from Humber late last year. The guys at Humber were first rate, friendly and helpful, but when we went for lunch in town, you could see that shop after shop was closed.... They were definitely suffering up there...

But great rib!

All I can say is Hull is a place that is growing, they have got some great places if you know where to go. Most the boarded up places have gone, they where made to because of the new shopping centre.

I must declare an interest in tornado as my father in law is a part owner, and his son was one of the guys who started Xs Ribs.

All that aside it's great for a a small city to have a great sea fearing heritage and carry that on through ribs.

They both don't give much away but I know one of them had built 70 ribs .+ this year!

They're not all green anymore! You can still spot them a mile away - usually with a queue of traffic behind them as they're the ONLY HGVs that stick to the 40 limit on single carriageways.

You would be part of the olive green t shirt & shiny boot brigade then ; )

I know the Dutch have had a great influence over the centuries in Hull but stood in some of the older parts of the Town even today with some of the newer buildings around it gives the feel you could be stood in Amsterdam or somewhere else in Holland ,

Also remember being shown in the mid 70s one of the very first early (pre )Tornado hulls when they had their roots in a large garage in Horsforth Leeds before they moved over to Hull ,, also remember David Haygreen saying to me old man that ribs are going to be a big part of the boating world in the future & some of his brilliant ideas that seemed a world away in those days .
